2007 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 crankshaft position sensor location

Welcome to the JeepSpecs.com in-depth page on the WK Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee camshaft position sensor. Did we miss anything? Please get in touch with us and tell us about it!

The Camshaft Position Sensor is an electronic device used in an engine to record the rate at which the camshaft is spinning. This information is used by the Engine Control Module (ECM) to control ignition and fuel injection. The camshaft position sensor senses the retraction of camshaft (intake) to identify a particular cylinder. The camshaft position sensor senses the piston position. The sensor system consists of a rotating part, typically a disc, as well as a static part, the actual sensor.

When the engine is running, the high and low parts of the teeth cause the gap with the sensor to change. The changing gap causes the magnetic field near the sensor to change. The change in the magnetic field cause the voltage from the sensor to change.

When the crankshaft position sensor system becomes inoperative, the camshaft position sensor provides various controls of engine parts instead, utilizing timing of cylinder identification signals.

Bad sensor symptoms (DTC P0390):

No- or hard start, long crank time, misfire, lack of power, excessive hydrocarbons in oil, spark plug fouling, catalytic converter failure, poor fuel economy, CEL/MIL illumination or intermittent shutdown.

Sometimes and in some models, low battery voltage or a weak starter can can trigger a Camshaft Position Sensor code.

My Jeep is pulling code "P0320". So I've got a new crank sensor in my hand, the problem is I cannot find the sensor location . I have felt as best as possible all around the top of the bell housing, from the top and from underneath, still can't find it. Very limited access on the right hand side. I suppose I could remove the tranny mount and lower the tranny to access the top of the bell housing better, just really need to know for sure where it is.

You have to unbolt the starter to get to the crank position sensor.

ok so I also have a crank sensor in my hand looking to replace on my 2000 4.7l WJ. Anyway hence the 2006 date of the post here I have searched! I have found it can be above the starter or on the driver side bell housing at 2 o clock position. That i need an 11mm or a 7/16" wrench. Can someone please tell me before I just start pulling parts to find it!

2 years later. I have... cross that HAD the same problem with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4.7.
I even had a Chilton book to help me find this illusive sensor... It was useless. I saw this thread and pulled the starter. There it was.
I'm sure this will continue to aid others as these vehicles surface through the timeline of wear and tear.
Thank you!
