Recommended oil for 2022 ram 1500

The famous Ram trucks made their grand debut about 30 years ago. To date, these trucks are known for their power, comfort, and scintillating off-road capabilities. In this article, we’ve decided to talk about the oil type used by Ram 1500 trucks. For starters, let us begin with a simple answer.

RAM 1500 manufactured between 2013 – 2015 use Mopar 5W-20 engine oil. Models manufactured between 2015 – 2020 use 5W-20 (for 3.L V6), 5W-30 (for 5.7L V8), or 0W-40 with MS-12633 specification (for 6.4L V8) API approved engine oils. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum engine oil is a recommended oil. The current generation with 3.6L V6 & 6.4L V8 engines use Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 engine oil.

*The engine oils used in Ram 1500 are not limited to these brands only. All engine oils fulfilling the criterion given below will work well with Ram 1500.

But this is only a short answer which doesn’t elaborate on all of the engine oil specifications. You should keep in mind certain things if you want to select the right engine oil for your car. Apart from this, you should also know when to change the oil of this vehicle, how to check the engine oil level, and how to reset the engine oil change indicator system once you are done with an oil change—intrigued yet? Read on!

What Is The Oil Type And Oil Weight Used In Ram 1500?

All recent generations come with several models and variable specifications. Although most of these generations use the same type of engine oil, there are certain outliers. In the section below, we have enlisted all of the major prerequisites that you’ll need to tick mark before buying the correct oil type for your car.

2013 – 2015

All three models manufactured between 2013 – 2015 use the same type of engine oil. Those engine oils are recommended that are API Certified, meet the requirements of Material Standard MS-6395, and have a viscosity grade (oil weight) of 5W-20. MOPAR® is a recommended oil for these generations. To find an oil that meets these specifications, click here.

2015 – 2020

Models manufactured from 2015 onwards have three types of engines. All of these engines use API-approved engine oils. Some other engine oil requirements are given below:

  • For the 3.6L V6 engine, Mopar SAE 5W-20 engine oil with the MS-6395 specification are required. Pennzoil or Shell Helix are some of the recommended oils. To find an oil that meets these specifications, click here.
  • MOPAR SAE 5W-20 5W-30 engine oil or equivalent Pennzoil® or Shell Helix® is recommended for all operating temperatures. Valvoline Full Synthetic can be used. To find it on Amazon, click here.
  • For the 6.4L V8 Engine, use Pennzoil Ultra 0W–40 engine or equivalent MOPAR oil meeting the FCA US Material Standard MS-12633 for use in all operating temperatures.

2020 – Present

The current Ram 1500 (2020-Present) has two engines: the 3.6L V6 engine and the 6.4L V8 engine. They both use the API Certified, SAE 0W-20 engine oil meeting the MS-6395 certification. Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic is recommended.

How To Reset The Engine Oil Change Indicator System?

All Ram 1500 models are equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. You will see an “Oil Change Required” message flashing in the EVIC display when the engine oil has completed its life span.

To reset the Engine Oil Change indicator system, refer to the following procedure:

For Vehicles Equipped With Keyless Enter-N-Go™ 1

  1. Without pressing the brake pedal, press the ENGINE START/STOP button and cycle the ignition to the ON/ RUN position (Do not start the engine.)

2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within 10 seconds.

3. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button once to return the ignition to the OFF/LOCK position without pressing the brake pedal.

For Vehicles Not Equipped With Keyless Enter-N-Go™ 1

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position (Do not start the engine.)

2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within 10 seconds.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

NOTE: The oil change indicator system did not reset if the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle. If necessary, repeat this procedure.

When To Change Engine Oil In A Ram 1500?

It is suggested that you take your car for an oil change when the “Oil Change Required” message is displayed on the EVIC. Severe Operating Conditions can cause the change oil message to appear as early as 3,500 miles (5,600 km) since the last reset. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km). After completing the scheduled oil change, your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message. Another critical point to note is that under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or twelve months, whichever comes first.

How To Check The Oil Level In A Ram 1500?

To assure proper lubrication of your vehicle’s engine, the engine oil must be maintained at the correct level. Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time to check the engine oil level is five minutes after a fully warmed-up engine is shut off. Checking the oil while the vehicle is on level ground will improve the accuracy of the oil level readings. Always maintain the oil level within the SAFE zone on the dipstick. Adding one quart of oil when the reading is at the bottom of the SAFE zone will result in a reading at the top of the safe zone on these engines.
