How often does a Toyota RAV4 need an oil change?

You should change your RAV4’s synthetic oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

Delaying the oil change past 10,000 miles could lead to engine damage, so make sure to keep track of your maintenance schedule. The mileage between each oil change interval can also vary depending on your driving habits.

In any case, check your oil levels regularly and add oil if necessary.

What kind of oil does a Toyota RAV4 need?

The recommended engine oils for Toyota RAV4 are synthetic oils with ILSAC GF-5 and GF-6 classification and viscosity 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, or 10W-30

Depending on your Toyota RAV4’s year, you may want to consider the following recommendations:

  • New Toyota RAV4 cars with less than 75,000 miles: viscosity 0w-20 or 5W-20, ILSAC GF-5, GF-6 specification

  • New Toyota RAV4 cars with less than 100,000 miles: viscosity 5w-30, ILSAC GF-5, GF-6 specification.

Using a different grade from what is recommended could damage your engine or void your warranty

If you are changing your Toyota RAV4’s oil yourself, double-check your owner’s manual for the correct grade.

fitting manufacturer specifications (5 or 6 quarts)

  • Oil filter fitting manufacturer specifications

  • Drain pan

  • Funnel

  • Oil filter wrench

  • ⅜” ratchet

  • 15mm socket

  • 15mm wrench

  • Lift or jack and jack stands

1. Warm up the engine

Turn your engine on to warm up the engine oil, allowing it to flow more easily. Once you’ve reached normal operating temperature, you can turn the engine back off.

2. Secure the vehicle

Jack up your vehicle and

use jack stands

to secure it in place. Ensure that your vehicle is secure before crawling under it.

3. Drain the old oil

Place the drain pan under the oil drain pipe to catch the oil that will flow out.

Use the ⅜” ratchet to loosen the oil filter housing drain bolt from the filter housing. Allow the oil to drain out of the filter, then remove the drain pipe by tilting it to the side.

Be careful as the oil may be hot.

4. Remove the filter

Attach the oil filter wrench to the ⅜” ratchet and extension to unbolt the oil filter housing. Remove the oil filter cartridge from the engine. Allow any remaining oil to drain.

5. Install the new oil filter

Slide the new filter into place and remove the old o-ring around the filter housing. Install the replacement from the filter kit.

Reinstall the filter housing onto the engine, then install the o-ring for the drain bolt onto the housing. Use the ratchet to reinstall the drain bolt.

6. Put new oil in the engine

Pour 5.0 quarts (4-cylinder engine) or 6 quarts (6-cylinder engine) of synthetic oil (grade according to your owner’s manual) into the engine through the oil cap—using a funnel to minimize spills.

Screw on the fill cap tightly and run the engine for a few minutes to check for any leaks.

7. Stop the engine and check the oil level

Turn the engine off and check the engine oil with the dipstick. If it is not between or slightly over the two dots, add more oil.

8. Reset the oil change reminder

Start the car and set your display to trip A. Turn the car off and turn your key to position one. Push and hold the trip meter reset button on the dashboard.

Turn your key to position two and keep holding the button for 10 seconds. If you are successful, the maintenance light will flash, beep, and turn off.

For newer Toyota RAV4s, turn on your car without activating the ignition and go to the gear menu. Scroll to “vehicle settings” and hold the OK button.

Select “scheduled maintenance” and hold the OK button again. Select “yes” to reset the oil life data.

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Toyota RAV4?

Regular oil changes are important to maintaining engine health. The engine oil keeps the engine lubricated, which helps prevent corrosion and engine knock, distribute heat, and improve fuel efficiency

Your engine could have a shorter life span and develop the following issues if you don’t keep up with your Toyota RAV4’s oil changes:

  • Engine corrosion

  • Decreased fuel efficiency

  • Overheating

  • Complete engine failure

Staying on top of your oil change schedule will help you avoid the expensive repairs that come with any of the problems outlined above.
