We YouTubed instructions and my grandson had my rear hatch door opening perfectly in no time for about 10% of what dealer would charge! A second plus is, I might have found my own personal mechanic! Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2019 This is a rather simple fix for the tailgate lock on my wife's 2009 Kia Sportage. Remove the handle and one screw on the opposite side. Using a cheap panel removal tool insert on sides of panel on the bottom and sides. Slowly pull outward to release additional clips near the top middle section. DO NOT try to remove the panel. All you need to do is have someone hold down on the bottom edge. The door actuator is near the bottom middle and only requires the removal of two small screws. There are several factors that can cause a door lock actuator to fail. One is corrosion. Over time, moisture, oil, dust, and debris can enter the actuator or the mechanical links.

Where is the door lock actuator located?Locate the lock actuator. It is bolted to the inside of the door frame by the door latch. Remove the electrical plug that supplies power to the actuator. It should come out by hand.
