When is the next episode of euphoria

Euphoria spoilers follow.

Euphoria season three was confirmed halfway through the second season's airing, so the only stress for fans was the brilliant show itself, rather than its future.

In an official statement, Francesca Orsi, Vice President of HBO programming, said: "Sam, Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken season two to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart.

"We couldn't be more honoured to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season three."

HBO's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys previously admitted a fault with the sexed-up high-school drama and that is its relatively short shelf life. "I don't think you want 30-year-olds playing [teenagers]," said Bloys (via TVLine).

He also commented on whether or not Zendaya's blossoming career would impact her commitment to future seasons. Of it he said: "I will let [exec producer Sam Levinson and Zendaya] talk about [that]."

Though he alludes to a looming final outing for the show, he does speak positively about the show's future.

"I'm very excited about what they've got planned [for season three]," said Bloys. "So I will leave that to them. I will say, generally speaking, we trust where they want to take these characters. So we'll let the creative team lead the way."

Hopefully this is not the end of the road, because we really need more memes of Sydney Sweeney giving us countless Emmy-worthy moments. So here's everything you need to know about Euphoria season 3.

(Be warned, spoilers are ahead.)

Euphoria season 3 potential release date: When will Euphoria season 3 air on Sky and HBO?

sydney sweeney, euphoria season 2

HBO

While we know it's happening, Euphoria season three doesn't yet have an official release date.

Euphoria season two was massively delayed by COVID-19-related production issues, although two special episodes helped make that long wait a bit more bearable.

This time around, we're hoping these issues won't impact the show moving forward, which originally led us to think that season three could arrive as soon as early 2023.

However, Grey's Anatomy's Eric Dane (who plays Nate's father Cal Jacobs) has slightly burst that optimistic bubble.

In his interview with Variety, the actor said shooting may happen as early as November but that doesn't mean the series will follow the next year.

"I just saw something that said 2024 which kind of makes sense," he said. "I mean, we'll go back and shoot maybe in November. I don't know. I haven't heard. It's always going to be changing."

Since then though, there hasn't been any confirmation that production will start in November, and we're actually in November now at the time of writing.

However, Production Weekly has suggested that plans to start filming in February 2023 are now underway. If so, that means everyone will be returning to set almost exactly one year since the season two finale aired.

And if that's all true, then it looks new episodes won't arrive until late 2023 at the very earliest. More realistically, we expect to see season three on our screens in early 2024, two years after season two came to an end.

Euphoria season 3 cast: Who is returning for Euphoria season 3?

zendaya as rue, euphoria season 2

HBO

Expect to see Zendaya return as Rue alongside the following: Hunter Schafer (Jules), Jacob Elordi (Nate), Alexa Demie (Maddy), Algee Smith (Chris), Sydney Sweeney (Cassie), Maude Apatow (Lexi), Storm Reid (Gia), Nika King (Leslie), Austin Abrams (Ethan), Colman Domingo (Ali), and newcomer Dominic Fike (Elliot).

Zendaya's role in season three was always a given of course (despite those pesky death rumours). Just recently, Casey Bloys confirmed to TVLine that "she's going to be in season three – it's hard to imagine doing [the] show without her".

As for Eric Danes' Cal Jacobs, the season two finale saw his son Nate show up to the warehouse he's been hiding in with a loaded gun and a USB full of Cal's underage sex tapes. Nate then revealed he called the police and Cal was arrested as a result.

Although Cal's arrest and subsequent return to season three has been called into question, Danes confirmed that the character would be seen again. When asked by Variety, the actor stated: "Oh, of course."

Speaking of how his role will develop and if redemption is on the cards for Cal, Dane teased: "There's gonna be redemption. I mean, that's the trajectory he's on. I can't imagine Cal's life from solitary confinement. It's tough to work Cal into the storyline when he's behind bars."

Whether or not reconciliation is possible for father and son has not been disclosed but Dane remains hopeful. "I hope [reparation is possible]. I think that's, in a weird way, what was happening in that scene," he explained.

"When I said what I said in the foyer, you notice Nate didn't say anything. He got a real chance to express himself with how he felt, even with the gun. The gun was his kind of way of saying, 'I f**king hate you, Dad, for what you did to me'.

"He even says, 'I've always protected you and you f**king hated me for it'. Because Cal felt like a piece of shit. He resented his son for that. But Nate gets a real opportunity to do what I did in the foyer."

One core cast member who will not be returning for a new Euphoria semester is Barbie Ferreira.

Ferreira called time to her journey as Kat Hernandez with an Instagram story saying:

"After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I'm having to say a very teary eyed goodbye."

She went on to say: "I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.

"I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez."

Ferreira has now joined the cast of House of Spoils.

Another key cast member who might not return is Angus Cloud. At the end of season two, Fez was arrested by the police after Ashtray accidentally shot him in a dangerous police encounter.

HBO

Given that the evidence against Fez is pretty overwhelming, we don't think he'll make it out of prison anytime soon, although it's possible that he could still appear if other characters visit him there (or perhaps the show's hallucinatory montages could even bring him back for a bit too).

The same can be said for newcomer Chloe Cherry, whose character Faye was arrested when the cops raided Fez's house.

However, Cherry has since opened up about what she would like to see for the character if she returned for season three, giving fans hope that we might see Faye again.

"I think Faye has a story of addiction to tell as Rue does; even though it’s different, I think that they could learn something from each other," she told Variety.

"I also think Rue is a non-judgmental character, and I think that is all Faye needs. I think if they got closer, they would get along because they have these shared experiences and they are both chill girls in spite of it."

One character who's even less likely to return is Ashtray, Fez's younger brother.

That aforementioned shootout ended with Javon Walton's character dying offscreen, and although we didn't see a body, that's probably because he's a child, not because of any wider mystery surrounding his demise.

Kathrine Narducci, who appears as Fezco's grandmother in the early moments of Euphoria season two certainly made an impact, going viral pretty much instantly.

"First of all, my niece called me up," Narducci told Elle. "[She] is obsessed with the show and knew about it before I did the show. And she goes, 'Oh my God, you have a million hits on TikTok.' I was like, 'What?'"

And she's hoping she'll return for the third season, following that viral success. There's just the whole 'being in a coma' situation to overcome first.

"I hope I go back," Narducci said. "I got to come out of that dang coma. I told [director] Sam [Levinson] I want to come out of the coma, and go after Laurie...She's going to come after Zendaya. Zendaya needs a little help."

There's also been some talk of Zendaya's boyfriend Tom Holland appearing at some point too.

According to Buzzfeed News, the Man Otherwise Known As Spidey even hung out on set while season two was being filmed, and Zendaya has since told Entertainment Tonight that a cameo has indeed been discussed.

Euphoria season 3 plot: What will happen in Euphoria season 3?

hunter schafer as jules, euphoria, season 2

HBO

Euphoria used two special episodes to fill the gap between seasons one and two. While these were born of COVID-related issues, the reception for these was hugely positive, which means that more could potentially be made to hone in on different characters in the build-up to season three.

In the meantime, expect season three to continue unravelling the threads that were torn apart by season two's explosive finale.

Nate will have to deal with the repercussions of sending his father to prison, Cassie and Maddy might have a chance at becoming friends again (maaaaybe), and then there's Jules. Clearly, she's keen to make up with Rue, but given how that final voiceover went, it's safe to assume that the fan-favourite pair won't ever get back together.

Meanwhile, there's a big mystery that Euphoria still hasn't tackled directly yet, which could become a key storyline in season three. We are, of course, talking about Nate's secret third brother who's appeared not once, but twice, in a family portrait across both seasons.

Fans have been talking about the youngest Jacobs' brother since the very first episode, and while some theories are more outlandish than others – that ain't Ashtray – the secret behind his disappearance could be exactly the kind of messed up thing this show thrives on.

And then there's Young Cal's secret love for Derek, another character who could cause some massive ripples if he decided to return in season three. That doesn't seem particularly likely though now that Cal has been arrested following the events of season two's finale.

Cal himself might not even come back, although we imagine he could return in some kind of prison or courtroom scenes that explore his downfall further.

Sydney Sweeney's Cassie got darker in season two – and the actress would like to see that continue in season three.

HBO

"There was a bit of Cassie that I got to play with when she started saying that she's crazier than Maddy in a scene with Nate. And she kind of got a little more evil and dark and serious, and not so frantic. I would love to play with more of that streak within herself," she told Variety.

"I like playing characters that are complex and have multiple layers. And people wonder if they're evil or good, and pure or not. I like playing characters that make people think and make me think.

"Cassie, especially in the beginning, I never thought of her as scary. I just think of her as a really fragile, damaged girl."

Could Ashtray return in season three? "With Ashtray, we're not a 100 percent if he's dead, because you saw absolutely no blood, right?" Walton told EW.

"And you didn't see him fall. You did hear the bullet, but you didn't see him get shot. So, there's little things that could potentially bring him back for another season."

If he does, Walton has some hopes for his character:

"I hope he realises that drugs isn't the right path for him. He needs to just focus on himself cause he's given another chance at life if he is back. So, you know, he needs to make the most of it. He's a 13-year-old boy in the show, you know, he has a lot to live for."

HBO

Speaking to Variety, Zendaya said of Rue: "Rue wants to be here and it's up to her now. I really hope that we can explore her life in the future, closer to the other side and her sobriety journey."

The actress added: "We carried her all the way to hopefully what is rock bottom and a dark moment, and hopefully by the end leave with a sense of happiness and joy that there is hope for her in the end."

While the immediate aftermath of all these storylines is something that we would very much like to see, Zendaya has something a little different in mind.

Now that the multi-talented actress is a producer on the show, she's teased that she would would like to see a time jump in which the characters are no longer in high school.

"I think it'll be exciting to explore the characters out of high school," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I want to see what Rue looks like in her sobriety journey, how chaotic that might look."

Zendaya has also discussed her expanding role in the series from behind the camera, adding:

"I'm there every step of the way, even through editing, and that's really, really special. You don't usually get that kind of hands-on experience, and everybody is different with how they choose to produce. It's a labour of love for all of us."

There won't be any new footage until closer to season three's air date, which means we might not see more of Rue and co until late 2022 or early 2023 at the earliest.

But keep us bookmarked, we promise to keep you updated with any more news. Until then, you can binge-watch seasons one and two all over again!
