Following the success of this declaration, a proposal to observe International Day of Girl Child was put forth in the 55th United Nations General Assembly. Rona Ambrose, the Minister for the Status of Women of Canada, sponsored the resolution and a group of women and girls created presentations to support the
initiative on the Status of Women. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted the Resolution 66/170 and declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. The aim to establish the day was to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The first International Day of the Girl Child was observed on October 11 2012 and focused attention on the challenges girls face and promoted empowerment of girls and
the fulfillment of their human rights. Every year the United Nations observe the International Day of the Girl Child with a theme and the celebrations are carried out all around the world.
