Easy peanut butter sauce for spring rolls

There are many different versions of peanut sauce, some with hoisin sauce, fish sauce, broth, etc. This recipe requires no cooking or heating up, so it's quick to put together. It is vegan, so no fish sauce either. You'll find it very similar to the peanut sauce Whole Foods serves with their spring rolls.

🧄 Ingredient notes

To make this easy, no cook, vegan peanut dipping sauce for spring rolls, you'll need the following ingredients:

  1. peanut butter
  2. mirin (see below for substitutes)
  3. soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free, coconut aminos for soy-free)
  4. sriracha (or chili garlic sauce)

Peanut butter

Peanut butter is the basis for this vegan peanut dipping sauce.

Some substitutions for peanut butter are:

  • powdered peanut butter (like PB2 or PBFit), for a low fat, low calorie option
  • almond butter (this will obviously change the flavor considerably, but is a good option for those with peanut allergies)
  • sunbutter or tahini (again, this will change the flavor considerably, but is a good option for those with nut allergies)

Mirin

Mirin is a sweet Japanese cooking wine. It adds sweetness and tang to this recipe.

If you don't have the one tablespoon of mirin for this recipe, you can substitute it with 2 teaspoons of rice vinegar + 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or cane sugar.

Soy sauce

Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free option.

Use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce for a soy-free option.

Sriracha

Sriracha is a spicy garlic hot sauce. Add extra sriracha if you want this sauce to be spicier. Or, omit/reduce for a mild sauce. If you don't have sriracha, you can use chili garlic sauce instead.

Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for detailed measurements and instructions.

🔪 Instructions

In a small bowl, add all ingredients and stir together with a fork or whisk. Add water until desired consistency is reached. Top with chopped peanuts as a garnish (optional).
