Delete photos from google photos but not device reddit

So I typically use the Apple Photos app to store my photos because I have an iPhone. But I wanted to share an album with someone who wanted it to be on Google Photos. I downloaded the Google Photos app on my iPhone, and it would not let me use it without accessing ALL of my photos.

Once I granted the app this permission, Google photos began syncing all my photos and videos. I don't want Google to store all my photos as iCloud works just fine, and the Photos are now taking up all my Google storage that I need for my Gmail. Worse, if I attempt to delete the photos from Google Photos, it deletes them from my iPhone and iCloud. Truly infuriating!

I tried to deny the app permissions to access my photos (saw another thread suggesting this), but the app won't do anything without granting the permissions. Is there any way to get my photos without deleting them all one by one on a web browser? Google of course does not let you mass delete on the desktop. It seems like they have me hostage, because I need the storage for my email but they won't let me free any up from photos.

Delete photos from google photos but not device reddit

I have upwards of 5,000 photos & videos backed up on google from my iphone, and I’m wanting to free up some space. Because they are synced, if I delete some large videos from my phone they are also deleted from Google photos. The only option to “free up space” involves deleting every single photo & video on my device & keeping them all on google photos. Is there a way to just delete some things on my device without them deleting from google photos too?

If you use the gp app to delete, the photo gets deleted in both places. If you use a native device app (not gp) it will get deleted from the device but not from the gp cloud. You could slow use the gp app option to delete from device (versus a normal delete).

On google photos Press and hold on a picture and drag your finger down and it’ll select any pictures as long as you scroll, you can also select certain days/months. I usually press free up space then recover the stuff I need From recently deleted

Every time i delete a photo from google photos (even if i do it from the computer) it deletes the original copy from my phone. Essentially i am wanting to remove my photos from the cloud backup without the app removing them from my phone as well. I just want an option to "remove backup" Any ideas?

EDIT - SOLVED PROBLEM I deleted the photos app off my phone then went to the desktop website and deleted the photos. I then went back to my phone reinstalled the app and the photos were gone from google photos but still remain in my phone. So Just delete the app off your phone before deleting on the desktop page.

This is an option that google needs to add. I've found I can even rename the photos and put them in a different location on my phone, and after a couple of days, google will find them and delete them on my phone.

I'm going to send feedback the the GP developers about this, and change my Google play rating to a 1, with the same comments. (Apparently the email is not monitored, so that's just a waste, but perhaps they will see the ratings drop?)

If enough of us out here complain, they can break that synchronization easily with a toggle in the app.

My Google account is out of storage because of my photos.. I just want to delete some more recent photos from Google photos and keep them in my actual camera roll instead, but it’s so frustrating. I turned off backup sync but even then whenever I delete Google photos they get deleted off of my camera roll.

There’s literally no way to free storage off my account without permanently deleting photos on both my camera roll and my account. Which literally ruins the whole point of trying to save your photos. Who the hell came up with this system?

So I have 2 phones (with a lot of photos on both). My main phone was so full it stopped properly working, so I've been deleting things, which is why I downloaded Google Photos. I synced the device to my main google account (and it was empty on the app). My second phone is now getting full, so I decided I would do the same thing and sync that to one of my other google accounts. Except, when I went to download GP, it was already installed. I opened it to see it was connected to my main google account and now all the photos on my second phone have popped up in the GP app under the same google account as my other phone. I didn't want that, so I was going to delete the photos on GP and start resyncing them to the correct emails, but then I noticed it says it will delete the photos from the devices themselves....

Anyways, my question is:

I've seen a few people THEORIZE that you can turn off sync or log out of Google Photos, then go on your computer and delete pictures and it wont delete from your phone, but they never come back to say if it worked or not. So, has anyone actually tried this method? Does it work? Or do I have to just keep them under the same email and live with it?
