An Analysis of the Book Christmas Day in the Morning

Christmas Day in the Morning" by Pearl S. Buck is a short story in which a boy named Rob realizes that his dad loves him when overhearing a conversation between both of his parents. With that he wants to do something for his father for Christmas. Something that would never be forgotten and would show that he loves his father back. So Rob decides that he wants to wake up early in the morning of Christmas day and do the strenuous task of milking the family cows. A task that was usually done by both him and his father every morning.

In the short story "Christmas Day in the Morning" there isn't really a conflict. It's more of the main character realizing something after so many years. Then wanting to do something so that another character knows that he has figured it out. In terms of the main character the conflict is that Rob didn't realize that his father loved him until he overheard a conversation between the both of his parents. Once he has realized that his father loves him he decides he wants to does something to show that he knows he is loved and that he loves his father back. The main character in this story is Rob. Rob is the person in the story that didn't know his dad loved him until overhearing a conversation. Throughout the story Rob seems to develop rapidly. In the beginning he appears to be this person that doesn't really care about his life and the people in it. Then by the time the story ends he becomes this person that puts others before himself. A person that loves his family and strives to show to it every day.

In the story, "Christmas Day in the Morning" the setting takes place in Robs parents' house and in their barn where they keep the cows. The barn is relevant to the story because Rob must go there if he is to milk the cows for his father. If the barn wasn't there then he probably wouldn't choose to milk the cows meaning that his father would receive a gift that is not much as big of a deal. The house is relevant to the story because that's where Robs father goes to wake rob every day. It s also relevant because that's where the scene of when his father goes to Rob to thank him for milking the cows. Some important quotes from the story in when Rob overhears his parents talking about not want to wake his up because he is still growing. The quote goes," Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I go in to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone." Another quote that is important to the story is when Rob decides he is going to milk the cow, and that quote goes," The thought struck him like a silver dagger. Why should he not give his father a special gift too, out there in the barn? He could get up early, earlier than four o'clock, and he could creep into the barn and get all the milking done. He'd do it alone, milk and clean up, and then when his father went in to start the milking he'd see it all done. And he would know who had done it" The last quote that I think is important is when Adam, Robs father, goes to his son, Rob, to thank him for the job that he had done. That quote goes, "He found his father and clutched him in a great hug. He felt his father's arms go around him. It was dark and they could not see each other's faces... Son, I thank you. Nobody ever did a nicer thing"

The theme in the story," Christmas Day in the Morning" is to don't assume the unknown. That's the theme to story because through Robs fifteen years of life he just assumed that his dad didn't love at all. It took him to accidentally overhear a conversation between Mary and Adam, his parents, before he could understand that he was loved.

The style of the short story, "Christmas Day in the Morning" is kind of straight forward. There wasn't much that needed to be inferred. The writer just put it all out there. The point of view was first person omniscient. This story is first person omniscient because it uses me and my, but also because the main character kind of goes back to a point in life to relive
