Can you use water based paint over oil based paint

For decades we painted all wooden and steel based surfaces with oil based paint. In recent years this trend has changed as we move from oil based paints to water based equivalents.

Undercoat, Satinwood or Satin Finish and Gloss are all available as water based products. Many people are fearful about painting over surfaces that have an oil based paint already on them with a water based paint as the water based paint has proven to peel off the oil based paint in a short period of time.

When applying water based paint to a surface that already has an oil based finish it is important to coat the surface with an adhesion primer such as Crown PX4 or Zinsser BIN Primer

Applying an adhesion primer before painting the surface will ensure that the water based paint does not peel off the oil based surface as the adhesion primer ensures it sticks to the surface

In other to successful apply water based undercoat or satinwood to a surface that has been painted in oil based paint we suggest the following steps

  1. Rub the area down with sandpaper

  2. After sanding dust the area

  3. Apply 1 coat of an adhesion primer such as the ones we mention above

  4. Undercoat the surface

  5. Once dry, fill the surface and touch up the filler

  6. Finish the surface in gloss or satinwood

What happens when you put acrylic paint over oil paint?

What you should not do is paint a layer of oils and then paint over it with acrylics. Here's why: the acrylic paint will be unable to stick to the oil paint, so it will flake off. This can sometimes happen very quickly, almost as soon as the acrylics dry, or sometimes it can take weeks.
