Apple TV+’s drama Truth Be Told has lined up a new co-lead for its third season.

Gabrielle Union has joined the series to star opposite Octavia Spencer. She boards the anthology after Aaron Paul and Lizzy Caplan (season one) and Kate Hudson (season two) shared top billing with Spencer.

Based on a novel by Kathleen Barber, Truth Be Told follows journalist turned true crime podcaster Poppy Scoville (Spencer) as she risks everything, including her life, to pursue truth and justice.

In the third season, Union (Being Mary Jane, Disney+’s Cheaper by the Dozen) will play Eva, an outspoken high school principal who becomes embroiled in a problematic incident.

Truth Be Told comes from Hello Sunshine, Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content. Nichelle Tramble Spellman created the series and executive produces with season three showrunner Maisha Closson (Claws, The L Word: Generation Q); Spencer; Hello Sunshine’s Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter; Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping; and Mikkel Nørgaard.

Union starred in Spectrum Originals’ L.A.’s Finest for two seasons and played the title role on BET’s Being Mary Jane. Her film credits include Bring It On, Bad Boys II, Almost Christmas and the forthcoming The Perfect Find. She’s repped by Range Media Partners, CAA, Felker Toczek and The Lede Company.

The idea of the show is not bad but the writing is just not good! The characters are all unlikable and there's no flow to the show. I'm not a fan of Octavia Spencer but I actually don't think it's her fault. The characters are written in a way that makes them look weak. One minute they have faith and care all about truth and justice and then all of a sudden they couldn't care less. In one scene they talk about how it's impossible to find a certain witness and in the next scene they're talking to that exact witness (just out of the blue). Not to mention that people seem to remember things that happened twenty years ago like it was yesterday. It's not believable.

Another thing that really bother me, is that the main character starts the show worrying her actions may have contributed to the destruction of a young man's life but to get him out of it she has no problem ruining other people's lives on the most faint evidences (if you can even call it that) or stupid speculations.

The acting is mostly ok (although not always) but it feels like they are trying way to hard to sell it. There were scenes that should have made me cry but I felt nothing. It felt forced. It just didn't have a true feel to it and by the end of the season we are left with plenty of unanswered questions. There's "closure" (or something of a sort), we learned what really happened but it doesn't make a lot of sense and if you really think about it, there's just a lot that doesn't add up. Also, the dialogue is not good. I found myself wondering many times "who would say that" or "who talks like that".

Can't recommend it, sorry.

Other executive producers include Octavia Spencer via her Orit Entertainment, Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for their company Hello Sunshine, and Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kristen Campo for Chernin Entertainment. On May 2, 2018, Apple announced that they had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of ten episodes.[6] On June 13, 2018, it was reported that Anna Foerster would direct the series' first episode.[7] A featurette from the series was released on November 26, 2019.[8] On March 5, 2020, Apple renewed the series for a second season,[9] which premiered on August 20, 2021.[10] On December 7, 2021, Apple renewed the series for a third season.[11]

Additionally, it was reported that Bloodgood had dropped out of the role of Cath Min after filming of the first four episodes had been completed. The role was expected to be recast and her already-filmed scenes to be reshot.[18][19] On October 8, 2018, it was announced that Katherine LaNasa had been cast to replace Bloodgood, and her character Cath Min, in the newly devised recurring role of Noa Havilland.[20] On March 23, 2022, it was reported that Gabrielle Union has been cast as a lead role in the third season.[21] On April 5, 2022, it was announced that Ana Ayora had joined the cast in the third season.[22]
