Wheres the most common oil leak on a 27 horse kohler motor on a exmark lazer z

I have husqvarna lawn mower with 27hp engine, oil started leaking from behind oil filter. So i was going to mow my yard before i started to work on it. Thought it might just be filter was loose tighten the filter a litter but still leaking oil. Still leaking oil, looks like right behind filter so check oil level and decided to mow first made about two round then all of sudden oil brew all over me and i was wondering if there is a oil ring or seal behind that filter and if it is fixable without pulling the whole engine and how hard it is to fix

    Thanks
    Derrick

It could simply be that the seal on your oil filter is grinched and that a new filter is required. Don't over tighten. If your engine has an oil cooler, the seal for the cooler could have issues.

Having the wrong filter can make for big problems.

Not making certain the seal from the old filter was not stuck to the aluminum block and now you are trying to seal the new filer and its seal to the old seal which does not work.

Removing the filter you now have would be step one to allow you to check more closely. If there is no old seal stuck to the block, you have the correct filter for certain, carefully reinstall the problem filter.

Are you doing the oil and filter changes yourself and never had a problem before? Failing to oil the rubber seal on a new filter can lead to problems as can over tightening.

what do you mean by seal on oil filter be grinched

So if your particular engine doesn't have a plastic base where the filter screws on with a couple of hoses running up to a cooler, just put a new filter that says Kohler on it ... 5205002s(1) should fit nicely for just about any Kohler on a Husqvarna.

Grinched = Distorted (In this case anyway). Out of shape, Twisted when installed and not sealing correctly.

Do you have any mechanical capability?
If so, remove oil filter and assess sealing surfaces on block and filter and if unsure what you're seeing post pics here.
If not, take it into your dealer.

I took the filter off but it looks like it is leaking from right behind the filter area before it had a drip, i will try changing the filter and see if that helps. Overdue for a oil change anyway

i doubt anyone is going to be able to speculate without more detail of where the oil is located, under engine? carb side? others side? front or rear? high/low on engine?

"Massive oil leak"....."major oil leak"! As johninmd says, not much info to go on. Though the oil leak becomes a "major", there has to be a point where it is just a "buck private". You may have to watch closely for "that magic moment" when the oil first begins to escape.

Agreed - theres not a lot of good information to work with here.

Based on the info provided - I assume your engine is not smoking badly from the exhaust ?

Is the oil filter tight ? Is the dipstick tight ?

What about putting an old pizza box (card board) under the engine when the engine is off and the oil is topped off.

Let it sit for a few days and see if its slow weeping leak...

You may have to climb under the unit - Or get it up on ramps and see it you can spot the leak with a flashlight.

I had a brand new tractor with a Briggs Intec twin that did exactly that type of leak. It turned out to be a pinched valve cover gasket (mis-installed at the factory). Once the engine warmed up, the hot and slightly thinner oil would push through the gasket and spray on the exhaust pipe. WHOA! Looked massive, was actually a minor leak made to look like a big time problem by all the smoke generated. It was simple to track down once we'd cleaned it up and then sat watching it run. I believe the gasket cost about $1.28 and the repair took 5 minutes.

Still, its hard to believe one could not find where the leak was coming from.

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately the oil leak starts after the mower is running and I can't find anyone to follow me arond the yard. Sitting on jacks, engage the mower, ran it for 45 minutes and can't get that leak going. dipstick is in, no cracks noted. Have vacum at dipstick, valess wer resone 25 hrs ago. Wonderin if the exhaust is plugged, don't have a leak-down.. Presume that the seal is blown, but not sure of the cause. Any hints would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Valves were done 25 hours ago ?

Did this problem exist before the Valves were done?

If not - Id suspect that the valve cover gaskets are ripped or valve covers are not tight enough.

Have you checked the valve cover bolts for tightness ?

Hi, I have the same problem on a Kohler 25hp. Runs great for about 30 to 45 min. I have put in 4 crank seals. Seal are not damaged when removed them. I've Replace both Head gaskets new valve cover gasket have vacum on dipstick, new breather, checked crank end play. I work for Caterpillar Im a engine and Transmission rebuilder, I have not fixed this one yet...I have the same engine in a Kohler generator no problems at all it runs every Monday for 30 min for the last 5 years and longer when power goes out. ??

Replaced new breather reed and gasket? I've seen horizontal twins pump oil due to missing oil cap and dipstick seals. Good word is that you have negative cc pressure.

Hi, it's a vertical shaft, after removing the engine from the mower I wound a crack in the oil pan at the crank seal im going to replace the pan . Thanks

Why is oil leaking from the bottom of my engine?

Common causes of oil leaks include degraded engine gaskets, leaks from the oil pan, or improper or worn out seals. An oil leak also can be caused by a loose or missing oil pan drain plug or deteriorated valve cover gaskets.

Why did the oil leak out of the bottom of the lawnmower?

Faulty Seals One of the most typical causes of oil leaks is seals or gaskets that have gone bad. Because they're constantly heating up and cooling, they wear out over time. If you're dealing with oil dripping onto the mower's deck, it is most likely coming from one of the seals that helps carry oil around the engine.

How do I find a oil leak in my lawn mower?

If the oil leak is coming from the bottom of the engine, near the base, it is likely because of a problem in the oil tank or oil sump. Pull the oil dipstick out of the engine and reinsert it firmly. Restart the engine and check for an oil leak.

How often should I change the oil in my Exmark Lazer Z?

Lazer Z E-, S- and X-Series Change the oil and filters on your hydro system five times during the extended hour coverage guideline. These changes should occur at 250, 750, 1250, 1750, and 2250 hours plus or minus a 50 hour window.

Why is oil leaking from my bike engine?

Common Causes of Oil Leak Oil filters normally wears out and a common cause of leaks. If the seal starts to crack or loose, it allows the oil to escape. Oil pan seal between motorcycle engine block, eventually the oil pan will wear out, dry and brittle allowing the oil to seep out.

How many quarts of oil does a Exmark Lazer Z take?

Now use the three quarts of oil and refill the engine. When you get halfway down on the third quart of oil, start checking the oil level. Exmark oil has a blue dye to it which makes it a lot easier to check the oil.
