Jon Seda left Chicago PD after his character hit a “creative dead end.” But the actor may make a One Chicago cameo in the future.

Jon Seda’s Detective Antonio Dawson was a One Chicago fan-favorite from the moment he got his on-screen start in 2012. The detective first appeared on Chicago Fire in 2012 and then moved to Chicago PD for a starring role in 2014.

But five years later, Detective Dawson abruptly left the series. Apparently, both Seda and the producers thought that the character had played itself out. So in a joint decision, Seda left the franchise.

It’s been an honor portraying Det. Antonio Dawson in the #OneChicago world. To my cast #Family, I’ll always treasure the time and stories we shared. To all you #chihards out there, THANK YOU for being the best of fans! We’ll Always have CHICAGO 👊🏻 pic.twitter.com/pJRwphtMAu

Of course, audiences weren’t pleased with the decision to take Jon Seda out of the show. The character was in the middle of a dramatic addiction subplot. And when he left, the writers didn’t give Dawson’s story a proper conclusion.

In the end, Detective Dawson’s send-off took place off-screen. During season seven, Detective Voight mentioned that he took Dawson to a rehabilitation center. Then a few episodes later, the show finalized Seda’s exit by saying the character moved to Puerto Rico to be with his family.

However, despite the less than graceful exit, Jon Seda left the Dick Wolf series on good terms. And showrunner Rick Eid told CinemaBlend that he’d gladly welcome Seda back for a guest appearance.

“I think the door’s always open for someone like Jon”, he shared. “Everybody here loves him, thinks he’s a great actor.”

Why Burgess Didn’t Change Jobs After Adopting a Child on ‘Chicago PD’

Last year on Chicago PD, Detective Kim Burgess made a huge life change. She adopted a little girl.

Her new daughter, Makayla, was orphaned after her father murdered her mother and grandmother. And because Burgess has suffered her own tragedy when she miscarried, she instantly bonded with Makayla.

The detective was happy to take on motherhood and adapted to the change almost seamlessly. And despite the fact that the choice could have risked her future with the PD, she continued to work in the field.

During a recent interview with US Weekly, Burgess’s actress Marina Squerciati was asked why the character didn’t switch jobs after taking in Makayla. And Squerciati wondered why she would. Women balance motherhood and careers every day.

“It’s just like what I do every day. I may not be able to hang out with the cast because I’ve gotta go home and tuck somebody in,” said Squerciati. “You do the job the same, I just think you have less time to give people.”

It’s a sad week for Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med fans. The police procedural and medical drama are losing three series regulars after their seasons wrap up next month.

Jon first appeared as Antonio on Chicago Fire in 2012, where he was introduced as the brother of paramedic Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund). He’s been with Chicago P.D. since its debut in 2014.

The brunette beauty previously spoke out about her reasons for leaving the series, including what she described as poor working conditions. "I realized that as I was thinking I was like being the tough guy, doing the thing, showing up to work, I programmed myself to tolerate the intolerable," she explained on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert.

"I quit because, what I’ve learned is I’ve been so programmed to be a good girl and to be a work horse and be a tug boat that I have always prioritized tugging the ship for the crew, for the show, for the group, ahead of my own health," the 36-year-old added. "The reality was that my body was, like, falling apart, because I was really, really unhappy."

Colin Donnell, who plays Dr. Connor Rhodes on the series, and Norma Kuhling, who joined the show as Dr. Ava Bekker at the end of Season 2, announced that Season 4 of Chicago Med will be their last.

"I love my #ChicagoMed #OneChicago family dearly," Colin wrote in a post on Twitter. "And a special thank you to all the fans that have made these last four seasons so amazing."

On Instagram, Norma shared, "Thank you Chicago Med for two amazing years! Really going to miss this family, but feeling nothing but gratitude. A huge thank you to @nbc and @dickwolf for bringing me on board, to the best cast and crew imaginable, and finally to the fans for making these shows what they are. Can’t wait to cheer #OneChicago on in its future seasons with you!"

Deadline reports that like Jon, Colin and Norma’s exits have to do with their characters’ story evolutions. But the outlet also states that Jon could end up on another Dick Wolf show down the line due to his close relationship with producers.

The Chicago franchise is used to big shakeups in front of the screen and behind the scenes. In 2017, both Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire lost one of their co-creators as well as one of their executive producers/directors. Based on previous events, we doubt that these latest changes will cause the shows to lose momentum.

Watch Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET, respectively, on NBC.
