You can use your Capital One credit card for an ATM withdrawal by just inserting the card into the machine, entering the card’s PIN, and selecting the “cash advance” menu option. Enter an amount to withdraw the cash. And don’t forget to collect your card and cash before you leave. The exact steps may differ depending on the ATM used.

If you don’t have a PIN yet, you can order one through your online account or by calling the number on the back of your card. Capital One credit card holders can make an ATM withdrawal at every ATM with a Visa or Mastercard symbol, which is just about every ATM.

Where to make a Capital One credit card ATM withdrawal for free:

  • Capital One ATMs
  • MoneyPass ATMs
  • AllPoint ATMs

If you use an ATM that doesn’t belong to Capital One, MoneyPass or AllPoint, you might get charged a small fee by the ATM owner. You can find a fee-free location near you on Capital One’s website – that’s over 70,000 locations nationwide.

Why to avoid Capital One credit card ATM withdrawals:

Even if using the ATM is free, there are still costs for a Capital One credit card ATM withdrawal. All Capital One credit cards charge a 3% (min $3) cash advance fee. And while cash advance APRs vary by card, they’re all from 26.99% (V) and above. Interest starts accruing immediately on a cash advance, with no grace period. So, try not to make a Capital One credit card ATM withdrawal unless you’re in an emergency situation.

Another important thing to remember is that Capital One cards have a cash advance limit, which is the maximum amount of money you can withdraw until you pay some or all of it back. You can find this limit on your monthly statement.

For 360 products (360 Checking, Money, etc.) there are no additional fees when you use your debit card abroad (any transaction made in a foreign currency or that MasterCard® classifies as a cross-border transaction).

For non-360 products (Total Control Checking, Essential Checking and other products) we may charge a fee of $2, plus 3% of the total transaction amount, when you withdraw from an international ATM (outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

You can use your debit card anywhere you see the MasterCard® logo. Also, there's no need to notify us about your travel plans before you leave. If you have any questions or problems while you’re traveling, call our collect international number 1-302-658-9593.

The standard daily withdrawal limits for our accounts may vary on an account and product basis. Please find the standard limits for some of our products:

  • 360 Checking: $1,000 per day
  • Money accounts where the account owner is less than 18 years old: $500 per day
  • Non-360 products: $600 per day

Each ATM might have specific limits that may not allow you to withdraw the full amount. So, you might need to do multiple transactions to withdraw the full amount.

A cash advance is when you use your credit card to obtain cash, such as from an ATM or bank branch.  But there are others types of transactions that are also considered cash advances, such as using your credit card to: transfer money to friends using apps like PayPal, Venmo or Moneygram, pay a debt (such as a car loan) using a third-party bill pay service, buy casino chips or lottery tickets, or exchange dollars for foreign currency.

Know the cost:

Cash advances usually include transaction fees and a higher APR than credit card purchases. With each cash advance, we charge a front-end fee, or service charge, that posts to your account the day of the transaction. Be sure to review your account terms for details.

Things work a little differently when it comes to how payments are applied to cash advances. Check out your account terms so you'll know what to expect.

Know your cash advance limit and available credit for cash advances:

Look at your most recent credit card statement and find your Cash Advance Limit. Keep in mind, sometimes ATMs have additional limits.  You also must have sufficient total credit line available to take a cash advance.  For example, if you have used all of your available credit for purchases, you cannot take a cash advance, even if you have not used all of your cash advance line.

To get a cash advance at an ATM with your Personal Identification Number (PIN):

  1. Follow the cash advance instructions displayed on the ATM
  2. Make sure you understand any fees that the ATM might charge in addition to those outlined in your account terms before completing the transaction

How to get a cash advance if you don’t have your PIN

You can take a cash advance inside a bank lobby that displays the Visa or MasterCard credit card logo. You’ll just need to provide a government issued photo ID like a driver's license along with your Capital One card.

Forgot your PIN? You can request a new one. It usually takes several days for your PIN to arrive in the mail, but you might be eligible to get one instantly by requesting it online.
