Make Your Trip to the DPS Less Painful

A trip to the DPS can feel stressful without planning ahead. So, before you run out the door. We’ve gathered a few tips to make your trip to the Department of Public Safety a little less agonizing.

Just Don’t Go - Do it Online

Did you know the Texas DPS offers certain services online? You can:

  • Renew an expired drivers license or identification card.
  • Replace a lost or stolen drivers license or identification card.
  • Change your address on your drivers license or identification card.

If you need one of these services, try doing it online first. Go HERE.

Cut in Line, Legally

At certain DPS locations, you can electronically get in line through a service called Get In Line Online. GILO allows you to:

  • Apply for a first-time drivers license, learners permit, or ID card.
  • Take the written test or computer test (if you’re worried about the test, try a practice test).
  • Renew an expired drivers license or identification card.
  • Replace a lost or stolen drivers license or identification card.
  • Change your address on your drivers license or identification card.

Just schedule an appointment online. The DPS will send you an SMS text notification of your appointment time. Go to work, attend a class, run errands, or watch a movie until your approved appointment time.

Get In Line Online isn’t offered everywhere. Learn if your DPS location offers it HERE.

            Avoid the Rush

If online help isn’t available for your DPS office or you have a complicated transaction, your best option is to avoid certain times and days:

            • Avoid Mondays and Fridays. In general, Mondays and Fridays tend to be busier than other days.
            • Avoid lunchtime. A lot of optimistic folks brave the DPS at lunch thinking they’ll get through the line quickly. They usually don’t.
            • Avoid the day before or after a holiday. The DPS isn’t open on holidays. All those customers not getting serviced spill over to other days.

            Texas DPS Locations

The Texas Department of Public Safety, or DPS, has offices located throughout the state. In larger metroplexes, there is usually a DPS location in each of the smaller cities in that area. Offices are generally located in rural areas of the state, where populations exceed 50,000 in population. For rural cities that are smaller, you may be required to travel to the next largest city for the closest location.

Not all DPS locations offer the same services or operate on the same schedule. So before you go, make sure you have the correct information and you won’t have to make a second trip!

Where is the nearest DPS location?

Texas DPS locations are based on regions and counties. There are a total of eight (8) regions. Since Texas has 254 counties, not all of them will have a drivers license office so you may have to travel to take your test. The best way to find the closest local DPS office is by using the Texas DPS Location Search Tool.

Remember to call first! Occasionally, the State of Texas endures budget reductions and reallocation that can temporarily or permanently close DPS offices in rural areas. Calling ahead will ensure you do not arrive at a facility that is no longer operational.

Can I Schedule a DPS Appointment in Advance?

You may be able to avoid long lines to get your Texas learners permit or drivers license at the DPS by scheduling your appointment in advance. Not all offices offer advanced scheduling so it is best to find the location nearest you and see if they can accommodate you. Many of our students find the advanced appointments to be very helpful in scheduling their driving test and making sure it fits in their schedule.

How Do I Avoid Lines at the Driver’s License Office?

Texas recently launched new technology that allows you to “Get In Line” via text messaging. You simply take your place in the queue and then are free to handle other business while you wait. The system will send you a text when it is your turn. This will give you more time to study or clear your mind before taking the DPS written test.

To determine if your local office offers the Get In Line service, visit the Mega Center DPS Locations. If you are going to one of the offices which does utilize this technology we highly recommend that you take advantage of it. If you do not have a phone that has text capabilities, do not worry. You can still use the traditional paper ticket method to reserve your spot.
