Stop and shop breyers ice cream

Though the names are similar—and occasionally, people ask us whether one is a typo for the other—Dreyer's and Breyers are two totally different ice cream companies.

The change in name is because Breyers changed the ingredients and legally they can no longer call their product ice cream. One ice cream blogger wrote, "Frozen Dairy Dessert is the scourge of the ice cream aisle!." However, it's not just Breyers.

It's been almost two decades since Breyer's manufactured ice cream in Philadelphia. The plant had been in operation for about 71 years when Unilever NV shuttered it in 1995.

Seeking to eliminate the confusion this created, Dreyer's changed its brand name in the home market of Breyers from "Dreyer's Grand" back to "Edy's Grand" in 1981.
