Here is sort of a fun intro to the most fun hobby/sport on earth: https://youtu.be/yotOZVELSMc Show
Watch that video first. It's not gruesome and technical - but rather inspirational while just "laying the landscape" for you. There are bikes from department stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Canadian Tire, etc. and these bikes are usually $600 or less. Makes sense; it's a bike, and a bike is a bike, right? Wrong. There is an entire industry of bicycle manufacturers who are devoted to building high quality bicycles of ALL disciplines. You may recognise some of the names of the big firms such as: Trek, Giant, Specialized, Cannondale etc. among hundreds of others. These companies do NOT sell their machines through department stores, but through smaller Local Bike Shops (LBS). A right of passage is usually a $500-$700 introductory "recreation" mountain bike; like this Trek Marlin for example. I still remember mine, it was a Giant Rincon :) - $479 in the early 2000's. The caveat to all this? "Proper" mountain bikes are expensive. They range from $1500 to $12,000. Most people stick in the $2000 - $7000 range if they decide it's a sport they want to at least somewhat commit to. The most hoity-toity mountain bike I've seen was a customer of my local bike shop who had a custom Scott Spark RC with price coming out to ~$23,000 (CAD), but I digress. A bike like the one in your picture to be honest, is not appropriate for a fully grown man. One of those $500-$700 introductory mountain bikes from a reputable manufacturer are of much, MUCH higher quality and can last you a very long time if you care for it and only do light mountain riding. The most important things are sizing and ergonomics. Does a new bike fit you well? Is the bike good value? (Price vs. quality of the parts on it) Is it comfortable? Does it make you happy? Is it capable for the kind of riding you want to do? Do NOT get suckered into brand snobbery. Also, WEAR A HELMET. There's so much to cover and I want badly to help someone new to this sport as best I can by giving them good advice - but I'll leave it here for now and ask someone else on this sub to maybe "take it away" with their input or thoughts on next steps. There are definitely others on here with far, FAR more experience than I. Best of luck OP. u/powerfulsquid , 'nuff said?
