Hyundai sonata brake light wont turn off

Hi All,

The brake lights on my 02 Elantra won't turn off. Do I likely have a faulty brake light switch? If so, how do I replace it?

the switch is faulty, its fitted on a bracket close to the top of the brake pedal, once you get your head under the dash. with a flashlight you will see it

Look up under dash and verify that the jam nuts is not loose, been seeing loose/canted switch on a handfull of cars, tighten as needed.... had 1 that the nylon pad on the pedal arm rotted off and was laying on floor, it was that much more for plunger to stick out and turn the lights on...

riviving and old thread as this is the exact problem in my wife's 2002 Elantra. Took a look this morning and saw the broken nylon pad on the floor. Is there an improvised solution to replace the pad and not the switch? Or, might someone be abe to walk me through the steps to replace the switch? Thanks!!

Lo and behold, I experienced exactly the same problem with my 1996 Elantra GLS Wagon. After I pulled into the garage and switched off, wifey noticed that the brakes lights were all on. Perplexed, I hadn't a clue, but knew that the battery would gradually lose power unless I rectified it quickly. I did find a small circular plastic disc about 4 mm thick and about 18 mm in diameter lying on the driver's side floorboard, under the brake pedal. GOOGLE'ing "Brake lights won't turn off", the answer quickly came in the form of a short YOU-Tube video that stated that the problem was most likely due to failure of a small circular plastic (clear Nylon) pad (called a 'brake pedal bumper', somewhat incongruously). The video'er had experienced the problem on his Ford F**kus, but said that this was a common engineering feature on most cars' brake pedals. Checking that pad (that lies between the switch plunger and the brake pedal actuating lever), sure enough, that small bumper pad had failed (at about 131K miles). So, removing the brake lights fuse from the fuse panel (to spare the battery), I obtained a spare pad from the local Hyundai dealer. They cost about $3, so I got a couple for spares, since a small defect like this can cause all sorts of bedevilment (1. Your car won't allow you to shift into DRIVE if the brake lights fuse has been removed; 2. disconnecting the battery is NOT an option, since that 'resets' the 'check engine' gizmo; 3. leaving your stop lights glowing will make the bulbs super-hot and might even eventually do some melt damage to the wiring; etc.).

Incidentally, the part number for all 1996 through 2000 Hyundai Elantras is 109D-32876-25000 ("Stopper-Pedal"). A picture of the little culprit is attached (both the broken one and two of the new replacements).

For my 2001 Elantra, this little piece has a part number of "H 32876 25000" (mostly the the same number as listed above). Its about the size of a quarter (round diameter), about 1/8th inch thick. It has a little extra piece on the back that goes into the hole of the pedal (the hole is about the diameter of a #2 pencil), to hold it into place.

If you were desperate, I think you could temporarily go to a hardware store, and get something that I think is called a "cabinet door bumper". Get the biggest one you could find. Here, you would rely on the stickiness of the back of the "cabinet door bumper" to keep it in place, since it does not have that same "little extra piece" that does into the hole of the pedal.

A cabinet door bumper is a little hard plastic piece you put on the inside of your cabinet doors, so that when you close them, the full cabinet door wood, does not "clank" the cabinet frame wood, full force. If you go to [email protected] and search for "cabinet door bumpers", most likely you can get a visual.

Interesting enough, my dealership only had ONE stopper-pedal in stock!!! (I wanted to buy 2 of them, since it was only $1, but no luck). On the way home, as I looked at the new item, I was like "I could have probably used a cabinet door bumper".

PS It your cat sits overnight with your brake lights on, you may have a mostly dead battery. If you have a 5 speed, park on a hill and pop the clutch............

The dealerships should have plenty of these.

So, if you’re like me, and this happens on a Saturday afternoon and you don’t like close to the dealer, you can use one of those felt discs used to put under furniture. We had some in the house, so it was a very easy fix.
