Remember where you keep your SIM Card tools—those little metal things you occasionally get with a new phone? No, me neither, but don’t despair.

Fortunately for me, and you, I’ve found my way around removing the SIM card tray and microSD card slot without the tool that comes in the phone box. Here are 4 few handy ways to open the SIM card slot without a SIM tool.

Earring or piercing

The right tool for the job might be closer than you think, as in right inside your own body. Traditional earrings with thinner wires or hooks work best, on others, you might need to unscrew the ball/spike on the end. More extreme piercings might be too large to serve as SIM tray openers.

Using Paperclip to remove SIM card

Probably the next most common thing if you happen to work in an office. Not the fat plastic coated paperclips, but pretty much any small paper clip will get your SIM Card tray ejected. And when you’re done you can use it to attach various bits of paper together.

Use Needle to remove SIM card

If you repair socks and pants as much as I do (you don’t want to know) then you’ll have a needle floating around the house somewhere. Just use the not-pointy end in the SIM eject hole and press down on the edge of a table. I’d advise you not to try this using your hand.

Thumbtack/staple

Another ubiquitous object around the home and office is the thumbtack. There are many shapes and sizes but pretty much all of them are capable of opening your SIM Card tray. If you’re thinking outside the box then you’ve probably realized that you could also use a staple.

Of course, there are lots of other alternatives too, including a toothpick, safety pin or basically any other pointy thing you have laying around.

More roads lead to Rome, and so are more ways to open your iPhone sim card tray without using an ejector tool. Even though most methods are pretty straightforward, there are others that you haven’t heard of. So let’s dive straight in.

Opening an iPhone sim card tray doesn’t have to be done with the official ejector tool. You can open your sim card tray with just a paperclip. Just take any paperclip that you have by hand, bend it open, and stick it in the tray’s hole. Your sim card tray will now slide out.

Multiple Items To Open Your Sim Card Tray

Before I start writing about how to use all the methods to open up your sim card tray, let me give you an overview of the items you can use as an alternative. Just a side note, this list is not exhaustive.

So here are some tools you can use as an alternative to open up your SIM card tray.

Paper Clips

Let’s first start with the best alternative you can use to open up your SIM card tray, the paper clip. A paper clip is the most convenient, most available tool on this list. I mean, we all have paper clips in-house, and they might not all be used to bind papers together.

Mechanical pencils

A regular pencil will not work, though, since the diameter of its end is not very narrow. A mechanical pencil, on the other hand, has a very narrow lead. It makes it possible to stick it into the hole of your phone’s tray. However, make sure to press gently since the tip of your mechanical pencil may break inside your phone. It’s tough to remove the lead once it’s broken inside the phone.

Earrings

This tool can be on you even if you’re not home. If you wear earrings and you’re in the middle of nowhere, use your earrings, and that card slot will slide out.

Staples

Staples can be convenient if you want to bind a staple of paper together. But you can also use a staple to open your SIM card slot. Just make sure not to get pierced in your thumb since both ends can be sharp especially when you press firmly on the staple to make the tray slide out.

Sewing Thread

Yep, you’ve read it right. With a thin sewing thread, you can open up your SIM card tray. I’ve made a video that shows you exactly how to open your phone’s SIM card tray with just a thread. Make sure to check it out (the video is at the end of this article).

Toothpicks

The first thing that you may think of when you read the word “toothpicks” is cleaning the narrow places between your teeth. But toothpicks can also be very handy when it comes to opening SIM card trays. If your toothpick is too wide for the tray’s hole, break some of its wood to make it fit.

Keychain

If your keychain is a bit loose and thin, then use it as an alternative for the ejector. The idea is the same as with the paperclip. Try to bend your keychain a bit open until it’s sticking out. Stick it right into the hole of your SIM card tray until the tray slides out. Check the video at the end of this article to learn more.

Safety Pins

Last but very least is the safety pin. It might not be a good idea because most safety pins have a big diameter. But if you find one that is just small enough to fit in the hole, then you should definitely go for it.

How to Open your iPhone SIM card Tray with any of these tools

Now that you have an idea of what tool to use to open your SIM card tray, let me show you the steps you need to know to open the SIM card tray. Spoiler alert, it’s no rocket science.

For this example, I will take a safety pin. Yep, my least favorite way to open the SIM card tray.

  1. The very first thing you need to do is open the safety pin. In case you use a paper clip, just bend it open until it sticks out.
  2. Then you need to stick it into your SIM card tray hole. Press whatever tool you use until it slides out.
  3. Make sure to press gently since some tools can have a sharp end, and that may damage your phone.

Attach The Ejector Tool To Your Key Chain

We’ve just talked about all these alternatives, and they might save you if you don’t have the official ejector tool lying around. But what if you do have an ejector tool? How to make sure it’s always on you for these unknown situations?

Well, just attach that ejector tool to your keychain. That way, you will not run into the problem if you’re outdoors. Just be careful since the end of that ejector tool can be sharp, and it may pierce into your flesh if you have your key in your pocket.

Stick the straight side of the paper clip into the SIM card ejector hole as far as it will go. With the paper clip in the hole, use your thumb to press firmly until the tray protrudes. It should slide out slowly rather than pop out.
