Reshare someone else's post or story to your own story

Updated on September 26, 2022

What to Know

  • Tap the paper airplane below the post, then select Add post to your story > Your Story.
  • Tagged in someone else's story? You'll get a DM. Tap the notification, then Add This to Your Story > Your Story.
  • For either of these to work, the other account must be public with post sharing or story sharing enabled.

This article explains how to share others' posts to your Instagram story, how to repost someone else's story to your story, how to use third-party apps to repost a photo or video and a story-sharing workaround if you're not tagged.

How to Repost an Instagram Post to a Story

Most Instagram posts made by public accounts can be shared as part of your Instagram story for your followers to see. This is the only official way to share a post made by other people on Instagram, and it's popular due to its simplicity and how it links back to the original creator.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your iOS or Android device and locate the Instagram post you want to share.

  2. Tap the paper airplane icon > Add post to your story.

If you don't see Add post to your story, either the account isn't public or they've disabled post resharing.

  3. The post now appears embedded in a new Instagram story. You can now add the usual gifs, text, and music.

  4. Tap Your Story to publish as a new Instagram story.

How to Share an Instagram Story on Your Own Account

While it's possible to share some Instagram stories made by others to your followers, it must meet some requirements:

  • The account must be public. You can't share a story from a private Instagram account.
  • It must have Instagram story sharing enabled.
  • You need to be tagged in the story.

When you're tagged in an Instagram story, you'll receive a DM via Instagram Direct notifying you. If the account tagging you is public and allows sharing of their content, you should see a link in the message; to repost this story within a new story on your account, tap Add This to Your Story, and then proceed with the instructions from above.

You don’t need to follow the account to repost one of their Instagram stories.

How to Repost an Instagram Story if You’re Not Tagged

While there are numerous third-party apps that let you repost someone else’s Instagram posts, there aren’t any that support the reposting of Instagram stories. However, one way to get around this restriction is to use your device’s screenshot or screen recording features.

For example, you can take a screenshot of someone else’s Instagram story while you’re watching it, and then upload that screenshot to a new story. Likewise, you can use screen recording to record an Instagram story video, then repost that video in your own story.

When recording someone else’s Instagram story via a screen recording, the recorded video also contains UI elements from the Instagram app. You can remove these by using two fingers to move and resize the video while composing your new story.

How to Repost a Video or Photo Post on Instagram

There's no built-in way to repost photos or repost videos on Instagram. To get around this restriction, you need to download a third-party app. Fortunately, there are a large number of such apps for both iOS and Android, and most of them are free to download and use.

Download Repost for Instagram from Google Play if you have an Android device, or get Repost for Instagram from the App Store if you have an iOS device. Both apps are free and don’t require you to log in with your Instagram or Facebook account information.

The following instructions are for the Regrammer iOS app, but each step is practically identical to how you would use the Repost for Instagram app on Android.

  1. Open the Regrammer app on your iOS device.

  2. A message asks you to give the app permission to access your device’s photos. Tap OK.

  3. The app asks you if you want to receive notifications. This is optional. Tap either Don’t Allow or Allow.

  4. You're shown a welcome screen with instructions. Tap Skip.

  5. Open the Instagram app on the same device and find the post you want to repost.

  6. Tap the ellipsis in the top-right corner of the Instagram post.

  7. Tap Copy Link. The link to this post is copied to your device’s clipboard.

  8. Open Regrammer. The copied link should automatically appear in the search field within the app. If it doesn't, tap the field, perform a long press, and tap Paste.

  9. Tap Preview.

A short video ad may play. Ignore this and wait for your post to load.

  10. Your repost won’t show the name of the original Instagram account from where you got the video or photo by default. To add this account name, tap any of the four square icons.

Tap Dark to place a black outline around the original poster’s name.

  11. When you’re ready, tap the blue share icon.

  12. Tap Repost on Instagram.

  13. The app asks for permission to switch to the Instagram app. Tap Open.

  14. Tap Feed > Next.

  15. Edit the photo or video as you usually would by adding a filter and changing its settings.

Because you’re reposting someone else’s content, it’s usually best not to change the way it looks too much. This is especially true when it comes to artwork or professional photography.

  16. Tap Next.

  17. Add the post description, hashtags, people tags, and location data as you would when making a regular Instagram post.

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags in a post description. They can help people discover your post, so it’s a good idea to use at least a few.

  18. When you’re ready, tap Share to publish your post. It should now appear in your main Instagram account feed.
