How much to ship priority flat rate envelope

The idea behind Priority Mail Flat Rate is that if you can fit something into a Flat Rate-branded box, there’s just one price to pay, no matter how much it weighs or where it’s going. This simplifies shipping a lot, but that simplicity comes with downsides:

  1. You can’t use your own packaging, which can impact your customer's experience
  2. It can be up to 57% more expensive than using your own plain or custom packaging. View comparisons of Medium and Large Flat Rate Boxes vs. Priority Mail Cubic.

Priority Mail Flat Rate was really designed as a consumer product, and is not ideal for most business shippers. Even with Pirate Ship's BELOW Commercial Pricing shipping rates, there are only two types of Flat Rate packaging that are always a great deal: Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelopes (including Priority Mail Legal Flat Rate Envelope and Priority Mail Padded Flat Rate Envelope) and the Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box.

For other sizes, such as the Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box and the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box, you could save up to 57% by shipping your items with Priority Mail Cubic® in your own comparably-sized packaging instead.

How You Can Use USPS Flat Rate Boxes and Envelopes to Save on Shipping

One of the many benefits of shipping with USPS Flat Rate Boxes is that the boxes themselves are free. You can pick them up at any post office or USPS will actually ship the boxes to you for free. In order to have access to the USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate pricing, you must use one of USPS designated Flat Rate Boxes; you cannot use just any box of the same dimensions. This can be a drawback for some because, unless you are a high volume shipper, you cannot get customized boxes with specific branding. If using non-customized boxes is not a deal breaker for you, USPS Flat Rate Shipping is a great tool to spend less on shipping.

With a USPS Flat Rate Box or Envelope, you will be able to ship any item of any weight up to 70lbs to any location for the same price assuming it fits properly, without any bulging, within its designated box or envelope. That being said, let's dive into the different USPS Priority Mail Box and Envelope options.

Is it cheaper to mail flat rate or priority?

Looking at the USPS pricing chart, we can see that if your shipment weighs under 2 pounds, USPS Priority Mail rates will be cheaper than the Medium Flat Rate Box. The only exception is if you are shipping something between 1 lb, 1 oz - 2 lbs to Zone 9; in this case, it's best to use the Medium Flat Rate Box.

Is it cheaper to use your own envelope for priority mail?

Otherwise, Priority Mail® is just the name of the service class, and you can use any box or packaging that you'd like... and for most cases, it's actually cheaper to use your own packaging instead of a Flat Rate service. Use our postage rate calculator to find your most cost effective options.
