How much is to renew my license

A Pennsylvania driver's license is valid for four years, expiring on the day after the driver's birthday. PennDOT sends an Invitation to Renew (DL60A/DL60R) to each driver three months prior to license expiration. Individuals age 65 or older have the option of renewing their license every two years, instead of standard four years.

NOTE: Non-commercial drivers have the option to renew online, providing there are no corrections or changes other than a change of address.

*If you have not reconciled an outstanding sanction(s) in another state(s), PennDOT is unable to issue you any driver's license product. For more information, please see the National Driver Register Fact Sheet (PDF).

Process:

Step 1:

Receive an Invitation to Renew (DL60A/DL60R) or obtain Form DL-143 (PDF).

Return completed application with a check or money order made payable to PennDOT in the amount indicated on the form. Cash or credit/debit cards cannot be accepted. Make a check or money order payable to PennDOT for the appropriate fee.

A camera card will be mailed, and you should receive it within seven to ten working days after form is processed.

Step 4:

Once you receive your camera card, take it along with appropriate identification to any Photo Center to receive new digitized driver's license. You may be asked to verify the last four digits of your social security number.

PennDOT uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology when an individual has their photo taken for their driver's license/identification card renewal.

Customer demand for photo services is greatest the first and last 2 days of each month. Customer wait times are shorter on all other days.

Acceptable forms of signature identification include:

  • Pennsylvania Driver's License or Photo ID Card
  • Documents: Passport, Citizenship or Naturalization or Weapons Permit
  • Photographic ID: Military, Bank, Employee, School or Out-of-State License; or
  • Non-Photo: We may be able to serve you when providing a Voter's Registration, Medicare Card, PA Learner's Permit or Temporary Driver's License or Vehicle Registration.

You will receive a renewal reminder notice 45 to 60 days before your birthday in the year your driver license expires. It will be emailed/texted if you signed up for eNotify (electronic notification program) or mailed to the last known address on your driving record.

You may renew:

  • Your regular driver license within one year of its expiration
  • Your Instruction Permit (Class D) or Probationary License within 90 days of its expiration. Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to renew your instruction permit online

The interactive Driver License Guide is a helpful tool for information on driver licensing requirements. The guide will provide you with a checklist of requirements and allow you to pre-fill any required application(s). You may also be able to use the guide to electronically submit your application and schedule an appointment, if eligible.

Information about REAL ID µ

Wisconsin DMV issues REAL ID-compliant products (marked with a µ) in accordance with the federal Real ID Act of 2005. If you plan to fly within the U.S., visit a military base or other federal buildings, the Department of Homeland Security will require identification that is REAL ID-compliant (or show another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport) beginning May 3, 2023, the new deadline for this Federal requirement.

If you do not already have a REAL ID-compliant card and it is time for you to renew your driver license, you can upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant card for no additional fee if the upgrade takes place at the same time as your renewal. If you choose to apply for a REAL ID after your renewal, the cost of a duplicate card will apply.

When applying for a REAL ID driver license or ID for the first time, you must visit a DMV service center.

To obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver license when you renew, you must present additional documentation. One original document or certified copy (not a photocopy, fax or scan) from each category is required. Some documents may be used for more than one category, whereas some will only satisfy the requirements of a single category. The document categories include:

  • Proof of name and date of birth
  • Proof of citizenship or legal status in the U.S.
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of name change (if applicable)
    • If you present a valid U.S. passport in your current name, proof of name change history is not required.
  • Proof of Wisconsin residency (2)
  • Present your Social Security number

If you are a current Wisconsin resident who has never changed your name, you can get a REAL ID-compliant driver license by presenting:

  • Your certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Your Wisconsin driver license with your current address
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your proof of Wisconsin residency

As required by the Real ID Act, applications and documents will be electronically scanned and securely stored to detect and deter fraud and identity theft.

Steps to renew online:
