What is an FBI Identity Check?

An FBI Identity History Check is a report that summarizes felony criminal arrest and conviction records submitted from ALL 50 states and the District of Columbia to the FBI. This service is provided in accordance with U.S. Departmental Order 556-73 that states an individual may obtain a copy of his/her FBI criminal identification record, upon request, for their personal review and correction purposes, and to challenge the information on record, and for other court-related matters. Of note, this information is for your personal use only, and not for employment or licensing submission.

How do I obtain an FBI Identity History Check?

It’s easy! Visit a local IdentoGO Centers, securely provide your fingerprints which we will submit electronically to the FBI. A link will be emailed to you to safely access your Federal background check results. Click on Schedule an Appointment Today above to locate your nearest center.

  1. What is the difference between Livescan fingerprints and print cards?

    Livescan fingerprints are printed captured electronically, via a digital image that can be transmitted electronically; this provides for a faster and more accurate fingerprint collection process. Fieldprint Inc. has the largest network of Livescan collection sites in the country.

  2. How do I schedule an appointment to have my fingerprints collected?

    Click “Schedule an Appointment” and you will be prompted to create a secure user account. Next, you will select the reason you need to be fingerprinted from the list of options. If your employer provided you with a Fieldprint Code, you will be able to enter it here. After selecting your reason, you will be prompted to enter all demographic information required by the State of Ohio. Once this step is complete, you will be able to search for a fingerprinting location and schedule an appointment at a date and time most convenient for you!

  3. Do I need to schedule an appointment?

    Yes, an appointment is required to be fingerprinted. Walk-ins are not accepted.

  4. I am not currently in the state of Ohio. Am I able to be fingerprinted for an OH Webcheck purpose at a livescan collection site in another state?

    No; per OH BCI regulation, fingerprints must be collected at a site located in Ohio.

  5. Can an individual applicant sign up for this program?

    Yes; this program is available to anyone needing to be fingerprinted in the state of Ohio.

  6. I do not know the reason I need to be fingerprinted. What should I do?

    Please contact your employer or licensing agency for information on which reason to select to be fingerprinted. This will ensure your fingerprints are being processed for the appropriate reason and results are being sent to the correct agency.

  11. What if I fail to show up for my appointment, or cancel in less than 24 hours?

    If you do not show up for your appointment, or cancel your appointment within less than 24 hours of your scheduled date and time, you will be charged a rescheduling fee of $12.

  12. How do I obtain the results of my fingerprint-based background check?

    During the registration process, you will be prompted to select a Direct Copy or Direct Mail option for results to be sent to, dependent upon your reason to be fingerprinted. The results will be sent directly by OH BCI to the agency or organization that you designate during this process.

  13. How long does it take to receive results?

    Results of fingerprint-based checks submitted to OH BCI are typically received within 24-48 hours. Results may take up to a maximum of 30 days. Note: Results are dependent upon processing times of OH BCI and FBI, which are subject to change.

  14. What happens if my fingerprints are rejected?

    If your fingerprints are rejected, OH BCI will contact you directly by mailing you a notice that will include your fingerprint-submission transaction number (TCN). Please contact Fieldprint once you receive this notice and we will reschedule you for an additional collection at no charge. If multiple collections reject for the OH state check, BCI will automatically initiate a name-based check. After two rejections for the FBI check, you will be sent another notice requesting you contact OH BCI directly to initiate the name-based check.

  15. What is the difference between Direct Copy and Direct Mail?

    Some OH agencies have the ability to receive background check results electronically from BCI. These agencies are available for Direct Copy results; agencies that cannot receive results electronically but will receive the results via mail from OH BCI are available for Direct Mail results.

  16. Who do I contact if I have not received a rejection notice and my agency has not received my results?

    Please contact OH BCI at (877) 224-0043 for an update on your fingerprint status and fingerprint-submission transaction number (TCN). They are available Monday thru Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm.

  17. Is an applicant permitted to work prior to completion of the fingerprint-based background check?

    The ability to work on a conditional basis until the results are received vary from agency to agency. Please check with your employer for more information.

  18. I have been fingerprinted several times in the past. Are you able to use those prints?

    No. Any fingerprints that you had collected in the past are not retrievable or transferable from other state or federal agencies.
