Can i walk in to renew my passport

Scrambling to get your passport renewed for your first trip in two years? While passport renewal could only be done upon making an appointment in the past few months, you can now walk-in to get yours renewed, or even complete your renewal application online without having to step out of the house!

How to get your Malaysian passport renewed

Option 1: Renew your passport online

You can now avoid long waits and crowded immigration offices by renewing your passport online from the comforts of your home! All you have to do is provide all the information required via the MyOnline Passport form and collect it in person once it's ready.

Note: only applicants aged 13 years old and above can renew their passport online.

Some tips for your online passport renewal

  1. The most common roadblock faced by those trying to renew their passport online is taking a photo that successfully meets the standards of the online system. Here are some tips to take your photo: wear dark colour clothing, take it in bright lighting against a plain background (with no shadows), and ensure your hair doesn't cover your face/forehead. Many also use photo editing apps to ensure their photo meets the specifications required (e.g: to remove shadows or resize photo to meet sizing standards).

  2. After completing your application, you'll need to pick up your new passport from the office of your choice. Make sure to bring along your existing passport, IC, and payment receipt for a successful collection. You'll have to head over yourself - no representatives are allowed. Applicants under the age of 18 have to collect passport under the accompaniment of a guardian.

  3. Online renewal applicants will typically receive an approval for passport collection via email within 3 days. You may head straight to the office to check on the status if you don't receive an email in 3 days (in most situations, they will already have your passport ready by then! If they don't, you can just hand them your receipt to get it done).

  4. Current passport renewal rates (5-year validity): RM200 for applicants aged 13 - 59 years old & RM100 for applicants aged 60 years and above.

Option 2: Renew your passport physically at the immigration office

After months of having to place an appointment on the Official Portal of Immigration Department of Malaysia prior to your visit, you can now walk-in for your passport renewal from May 9 onwards. You can typically received your new passport on the same day within 1 - 2 hours upon completing your application.

NS-Liable Males

With the introduction of BioPass, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has decided to remove passport controls for NS-liable males and allow them to be issued with passports of full validity.

Exit control measures however continue to be relevant and necessary. MINDEF has decided to extend exit permit requirements, which currently affect only males aged 16½ to enlistment, to males aged 13 to below 16½.

To avoid inconveniencing those who make short overseas trips during vacations, an exit permit will only be required for overseas trips of 3 months or longer. To apply for Exit Permit, please visit MINDEF website at http://www.ns.sg/.

Those who require exit permit of 2 years or longer will be required to furnish a bond. This bonding requirement is similar to the current arrangement where security in the form of Banker's Guarantee must be furnished. The amount of the security bond is S$75,000 or 50% of the combined gross annual income of both parents for the preceding year, whichever is higher. The monetary bond requirement for male citizens who accompany their parents on overseas employment may be waived and they be bonded by deed with two sureties.

There will be no change to the exit permit and bonding requirements for NS-liable males aged 16½ to enlistment.

Pre-enlistees who have any enquiries can contact the NS Portal Customer Service Centre at Tel: (65) 1800-3676767 (1800-eNSNSNS) or email: [email protected]. They can also refer to the NS portal (http://www.ns.sg/) for more information.
