The name Cardigan Welsh Corgi translates to ‘dwarf dog’ and you should see this four-legged canine. They are yard-long dogs and are known for their undocked tails and their very short legs. This, however, does not inhibit them from being sweet little companions. Discover more about our Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppies for sale below!

Breed History

The ancestors of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi are said to have been brought into Wales almost 3000 years ago. The Cardi was originally used as herding dogs as they could drive cattle to the farms and markets and this was ideal for farmers.

This breed was often regarded as the same with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi but this was resolved in 1934 when the British Kennel Club declared they were separate breeds. The American Kennel Club followed suit in 1935.

Temperament

Though the Cardigan does not herd cattle anymore, you would find them living with horse owners as they are quite instrumental with horses.

They could be very territorial rather than friendly and they are not so sociable. They really do bark at strangers or at sounds or scents of something they do not know or understand. They should be socialized early so that they get accustomed to people and sights.

Environment

This dog breed is suitable for any place you may be living. Whether in an apartment or in the countryside or in a house with a yard, they really can live anywhere. They only need to be exercised properly and of course given a lot of human attention.

If you have rooms with classy furniture, you should keep them off-limits as the Cardigan could indulge in distress chewing whenever his social skills are not in use.

Exercise

This dog is a hub and it needs to remain so. You would have to exercise your dog so he does not become unbearable to live with. You could let him play or take him out on walks or you could get him some herding exercise so he gets to stretch his legs conveniently. It does a world of good to their muscles. They tend to be very cranky when they are not getting enough exercise.

Grooming

You would need to brush your Cardigan a whole lot more to take care of flying hairs. So brush him daily and give him baths as needed. Brush their teeth twice weekly to prevent bacterial infections and tartar buildup.

Trim his nails if they do not wear off naturally and remember to examine his ears while cleaning them. You should get your dog accustomed to being bathed and examined at a young age so this does not come as a surprise to him.
