Zion National Park, Utah

By Jacoba from OP Reis Met Co

Zion National Park is the smallest national park in the state of Utah. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful and is one of the best places to visit in the USA in March. It consists of Zion Canyon through which the Virgin River flows. The river is surrounded by steep red cliffs which is an amazing sight to see.

What to do in Zion National Park? Zion is a hikers paradise with spectacular hiking trails for all levels. There are some easy trails, like the Pa’rus trail, which follows the river on the bottom of the canyon. If you don’t mind getting wet, you have to hike a section of the Narrows, a breathtaking hike through a narrow canyon. At some point, you have to hike through the river and that is a fantastic experience.

The most popular hike in Zion is to Angels Landing which is also known as one of the scariest hikes in the United States. During the last section, you have to walk along a narrow trail with deep cliffs on both sides. But once you get to the top, all is forgotten because the views are incredible! In addition to hiking, Zion is perfect for rock climbing and canyoneering.

Zion National Park is very popular, and can therefore get extremely crowded, especially in the (very hot) summer months. The best time to avoid the crowds is winter and early spring. The month of March is the absolutely perfect time to explore the hiking trails. The temperatures are mild and most of the snow is gone. In addition, it’s very quiet in the park compared to the rest of the year.

Weather And Directions

The average high temperature is March is 64 degrees Fahrenheit with night time lows of 39 degrees Fahrenheit. You should only have around 4 days with some rain.

The closest international airport is McCarran Airport in Las Vegas. From there, it’s a 2 hour and 45 minute drive to Zion. Just follow the I-15 to the northwest, and get off the highway right after St. George. From there, follow Highway 9 until you reach the park. Super easy!

Hotel Recommendation

Jacoba says, “Right before you reach the Park, you’ll pass through the town of Springdale which is a great place to stay. It has several good restaurants and there are many hotels. It’s highly recommend to stay in Flanigan’s Inn, not only because it is a nice hotel, but also because from there, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the entrance of Zion National Park.”

Savannah, Georgia

By Lydia from Lost With Lydia

Savannah, Georgia is a beautiful southern city that has something for everyone. Spend at least three days in Savannah to enjoy a mix of the city and nearby gems. Some of the best things to do in Savannah include visiting the Wormsloe Historic Site, taking a ghost tour and visiting Bonaventure Cemetery.

The Wormsloe Historic Site includes the ruins of a former plantation site, but it is most famous for the 1.5 mile tunnel of cypress trees at the entrance. You will be left in awe as you drive through the tunnel. After the tree tunnel, there are some hiking trails and historic sites to visit.

Savannah is said to be one of the most haunted cities in America, so it’s no surprise that ghost tours are popular among visitors. You can choose to take a walking tour, go on a bar crawl or take a bus tour around the city while learning the legends of Savannah’s past. Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, it’s a fascinating way to learn about the city.

Bonaventure Cemetery is a large and enchantingly beautiful cemetery located a few minutes from downtown. There are several famous people buried here and you can find them on a guided tour or on your own.

March is one of the best times to visit Savannah due to the mild weather and events. Savannah has one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States. The city hosts an impressive parade and there are St. Patrick’s Day parties around the city for several days before and after the holiday.

Weather And Directions

In March, average temperatures are a high of 70° and low of 50°, making it a wonderful time to explore.

To get to Savannah, you will fly into the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which is about a 20 minute drive from downtown.

Hotel Recommendation

Lydia says, “Ideally, you should stay on the Riverfront when you visit Savannah. This will allow you to be within walking distance of restaurants, bars and activities downtown. A couple of the best hotels are the JW Marriott Plant Riverside District and The Drayton.”

Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Washington DC, District Of Columbia

By Kenny from Knycx Journeying

Washington D.C., simply known as D.C., is located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia. It is, of course, the capital of the United States of America. It is one of the world’s most important capitals and one of the best cities to visit in the United States in March.

Washington DC offers an impressive list of national monuments, landmarks, and museums. Most of them are located along the National Mall, a beautifully planned green space from which the city grid begins with streets named by letters and numbers.

First-time visitors should try and stay at least a week in order to explore all of Washington D.C.’s must-sees. Those include a guided tour of the Capitol and the White House (for American citizens only). Pay respects at the Washington Monument, an obelisk celebrating the George Washington, the first president of the United States. Then, proceed to the Lincoln Memorial commemorating President Lincoln, considered by many to be the greatest president ever.

Venture a little bit further and visit the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, celebrating one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence. Then, go to Arlington National Cemetery where many American war heroes are buried.

From mid March to mid April, there are some great viewing spots for cherry blossoms all over the city. In addition, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is held during this time.

The Smithsonian Institution has a fabulous collection of museums and research centers administered by the Government of the United States. There are a total of twenty museums, eleven of them are on the National Mall, covering a wide range of topics from art, and history, to science and technology. Some of the must-sees include the National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution Building, National Zoological Park, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Once you have experienced what the city’s landmarks have to offer, unwind in one of the cool cafés or shop in a local boutique store in Georgetown.

Weather And Directions

The weather in March is mild and mostly dry, between 50°F and 60°F with a 30% of rainfall, perfect for an outdoor stroll to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is the main airport of Washington D.C. with connections to many domestic and international destinations.

Hotel Recommendation

Kenny says, “Recommended accommodation is any one of the many boutique hotels located in the downtown area along L Street, M Street, and N Street. They are all close to the Mall with unique styles and characters. Kimpton Banneker Hotel is particularly nice.”

Big Island, Hawaii (Photo courtesy of Jessica from The Uprooted Traveler)

Big Island, Hawaii

By Jessica from The Uprooted Traveler

The Big Island of Hawaii is often overlooked for its more popular neighbors, like Maui and Oahu, but is the perfect place for a spring getaway. With beautiful weather, March is the perfect time to lay out on the Big Island’s white sandy beaches and soak up the sun.

The Big Island is wonderful because of the variety of ways you can enjoy and explore Hawaii’s natural beauty. For example, one of the most popular activities in Kona is snorkeling with manta rays at night. Your tour guides will hop into the water with lights, which attract plankton and in turn, attract the plankton-loving manta rays. You’ll then be invited to slip into the water and observe these gentle giants glide through the sea. The Big Island is one of the only places on the planet where you can see manta rays like this.

Another unique activity is seeing an erupting volcano. The Big Island is home to the world’s most active volcano, Kilauea, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see an active eruption during your visit. Even if Kilauea isn’t erupting, a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must. You’ll get to explore lava tubes and craters and watch Mother Nature put on her spectacular geothermal show.

Another way to explore the island’s famed volcanoes is to conquer the summit of the world’s tallest mountain (as measured from the seafloor to the summit) along the Mauna Kea hike. Along this challenging trail, you’ll get sweeping views of Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Kea’s towering cinder cones, and one of the world’s highest alpine lakes.

Beyond being an epic hike, Mauna Kea provides one of the best settings to watch the sunset above the clouds. Just make sure you check the weather report before heading out as Mauna Kea can occasionally receive a bit of snow in the springtime.

Weather And Directions

You can expect highs in the low 80s and a low chance of rain on the Big Island in March.

To get to the island, you can fly to the most popular international airport, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, on the western side. If you wish to fly between the islands on an international airline, you will need to use Hawaiian airlines. There is also a smaller airport, Hilo International Airport, on the eastern side. You should plan on renting a car as the Big Island is surprisingly spread out and there’s limited public transportation.

Hotel Recommendation

Jessica says, “The oceanside Royal Kona Resort is conveniently located near the charming downtown of Kona and acts as an excellent home base for all your adventures.”

Las Vegas Strip (Photo courtesy of Stephen Leonardi from Unsplash)

Las Vegas, Nevada

By Jillian from Adventure Dragon

One of the best places to visit in the USA in March is Las Vegas. It is not just a gambling and party destination. It’s also a great destination for families, couples, solo travelers, and those looking for a fantastic destination to celebrate your 21st birthday.

From museums, art exhibits, gardens, and wildlife habitats to concerts, themed dining, shows, and amusement parks, there’s definitely something for everyone in Las Vegas. The best part is that many of these attractions are free.

If it’s your first time to Vegas, you definitely have to watch the volcano erupt in front of the Mirage Hotel. Performances happen three times daily, are free, and are set to a musical soundtrack.

Then, head over to the Bellagio Conservatory to see their extravagant indoor garden display. These gardens are available to view for free year-round, but the theme and decorations change with each season. The spring display is by far the prettiest of the year, often centering around delicate cherry blossoms and inspiring symbols of life and rebirth.

March is the best time to visit because the weather is at its mildest. Make sure you pack outfits for Vegas that can be versatile for various types of activities and most importantly, include comfy walking shoes.

If you enjoy hiking, a trip to nearby Valley of Fire can also be comfortably completed during this month’s cooler days. Alternatively, head over to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Both are nearby (although in opposite directions), between 20-60 minutes drive from the Las Vegas Strip. They both offer stunning red rock mountains, amazing hikes for all levels, and breathtaking views. Admission is only a few dollars per car.

In addition to great weather, March also offers some of the lowest airfares and best deals on hotels since the season is outside prime time.

Weather And Directions

With average temperatures between 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, a walk along the three-mile Vegas Strip can be done in comfort without worrying about overheating in the scorching desert sun.

Once you arrive at the McCarran Airport, the Vegas Strip is just 3 miles away and can be easily reached with a 10 minute drive or Uber. Many hotels on the Strip also provide free shuttle transport from the airport.

Hotel Recommendation

Jillian says, “If you’re on a budget, the Circus Circus Hotel provides the cheapest rooms on the Strip and also runs a free daily circus show that families will especially love. If money is no object, the Venetian Hotel is one of the most beautiful hotels and the best place to feel pampered. Make sure you visit the canals to watch the gondolas float through St. Mark’s Square.”

Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida (Photo courtesy of Erin from Super Simple Salty Life)

South Florida National Park Road Trip, Florida

By Erin from Super Simple Salty Life

March is the perfect time to take a road trip through southern Florida and visit its’ 3 national parks – Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and Dry Tortugas National Park. It offers some of the best weather of the year. In addition, it is outside hurricane season so you don’t have to worry about the weather changing your travel plans.

The perfect first stop on your road trip is Everglades National Park, one of the largest national parks in the continental U.S. The Park itself is magnificent, with cypress and mahogany hammocks, lush shaded trails, walls of mangroves, fields of grass that go on for miles, and epic waterfront sunsets. And so much wildlife! Take the easy Anhinga Trail to see tons of alligators, birds, and turtles right off of the boardwalk. Then be sure to get on the water either in a boat tour or self-guided kayaks to experience the ”real Florida”.

Biscayne National Park is your next stop on the way to Key West in the Florida Keys. It is tucked away off of south Florida’s coast and is incredibly unique because 95% of the Park is underwater. Instead of mountains or desert, the Park is made up of several small islands and bordered by a giant mangrove forest. Biscayne National Park also contains the northern part of one of the largest coral reefs in the world. This makes it the perfect place for snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Finally, you will drive further south and end your road trip in Key West, the starting point to reach Dry Tortugas National Park. This National Park is located in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Florida. It includes seven islands or “keys” covering 100 square miles of ocean. In addition, it includes the historic Fort Jefferson, coral reefs, endangered migratory birds, and unique tropical ecosystems.

The closest place to stay is in Key West, and because of the extremely remote location the only way to visit is by boat or seaplane. The ferry to the Dry Tortugas is the only authorized tour operator traveling to the National Park, providing day trips on an air-conditioned state-of-the-art catamaran.

Dry Tortugas has some of the most beautiful and healthy coral reefs in North America because of its secluded location and visitor restrictions. Most visitors spend the afternoon snorkeling and swimming in the clear blue waters exploring this underwater oasis.

Weather And Directions

The average temperatures are still cool enough to ward off mosquitos (averaging around 80°F) but warm enough to enjoy the beautiful beaches in all the National Parks.

The closest international airport to all three parks is in Miami. It is about an hour drive to the Everglades and a little over three hours to Key West and the southernmost part of Florida.

Hotel Recommendation

Erin says, “Biscayne National Park is located near Key Largo, and staying at the Key Largo Campground is the perfect spot to stay to visit both Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.”

Whitefish, Montana (Photo courtesy of Jen from Passions And Places)

Whitefish, Montana

By Jen from Passions And Places

The vast majority of visitors to Montana come in the summer months (peak tourist season) or at the height of ski season (December-February). But that hardly makes them the best times to visit the Big Sky State – especially a popular town like Whitefish, MT.

Prices and crowds get out of control during peak season, as sadly, does the fire risk and air pollution in summer. The good news is that March is one of the best times to visit. It is one of the least crowded months in Whitefish, so prices are usually near their lowest. Temperatures are getting more manageable and you can even pick one of the amazing ski resorts and go skiing.

Whitefish is the gateway to Glacier National Park (one of the U.S.’s most popular) and Whitefish Mountain Resort is the second-largest ski resort in Montana. This small-but-mighty town (its population is just 8,000) is also known for its thriving art’s scene, wide variety of food and drink options, and an abundance of outdoor activities.

At any time of year, wandering Whitefish’s charming downtown area is one of the best things to do. It’s packed with shops and art galleries, plus plenty of places to try some huckleberry-flavored treats (a must!). The small history museum inside the train station is worth a look. Hiking – or snowshoeing, if the conditions call for it – a portion of Whitefish Trail is another top activity. With over a dozen trailheads and nearly 50 miles of trail, hikers can choose nearly any length or difficulty.

Weather And Directions

Overall, winter temperatures in western Montana are not for the faint-hearted. with average highs of 44. There is only a 25% of rain.

Visitors can fly into Glacier Park International Airport, just 12 miles from town, or take Amtrak right into downtown Whitefish. In either case, it would be difficult to visit without a car. There are rental agencies at the airport and in town.

Hotel Recommendation

Jen says, “The Whitefish area has dozens of places to stay, but the Firebrand Hotel in the heart of downtown is the quintessential spot. March rates are ahem, five times lower than in the summer!”

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana

By Nicole from Go Far Grow Close

New Orleans is one of the best places to visit in the USA March for a number of reasons. The heat of the summer has not yet descended on the city and in many years, Mardi Gras is held. Known for its amazing food, fun festivals, jazz music, and interesting history, New Orleans offers something for everyone.

Mardi Gras is held every year 47 days before Easter. Accordingly, it is in February or early March. Mardi Gras is about music, parades, picnics, floats and excitement. It’s one big holiday in New Orleans! Sit back and watch or participate. Wear costumes or at least dress in purple, green, and gold, and adorn yourselves with long beads caught from the floats of previous parades.

While visiting New Orleans, you have to try the delicious food that made New Orleans famous. Grab some Cajun food at Evangeline, beignets at Café du Monde, a po’boy sandwich from Killer Po’boys, and a muffuletta from Napoleon House.

Once you are ready to explore, spend time walking around the French Quarter, in particular the infamous Bourbon Street, taking in all of the European architecture. You will be entertained almost everywhere you go with fun and very talented street performers.

While exploring the French Quarter, do not miss Royal Street. It is lined with great antique shops and unique art galleries.

Other fun things to do while visiting include checking out the art around Jackson Square, taking a free walking history tour, or heading on a day trip from New Orleans to visit the swamps or plantations.

For valuable tips for first time visitors to New Orleans, please see 40 Best Travel Tips For First Time Visitors. If you are traveling to New Orleans with kids or teens, check out this 5 Day Itinerary.

Weather And Directions

The average temperature March ranges from the 60s to low 70s, making it an ideal destination to explore in March.

Getting to New Orleans is easy. New Orleans is home to an international airport, the Lois Armstrong International Airport. You do not need to rent a car unless you plan to do lots of day trips. The city is easily walkable. In addition, a trolley system runs from the French Quarter to the Garden District.

Hotel Recommendation

Nicole says, “The French Quarter is where I would recommend staying. There are many hotels in the area that will put you in the heart of the action. We loved the Omni Royal Orleans. It has old world charm, is quiet, but only steps to Bourbon Street.

New York City, New York (Photo courtesy of Pixaby)

New York City, New York

By James Ian from Travel Collecting

New York is the City That Never Sleeps. It’s truly one of the most exciting cities in the world. There’s always plenty to see and do, but March is really a great time to visit.

New York has a huge Irish immigrant population, so the St Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the world’s biggest. Get dressed up in green and get ready to party. Watch the parade, then head to one of the many Irish pubs in town for a green beer and corned beef!

March sees the city emerging from winter and there are two wonderful spring events not to miss. At the Macy’s Flower Show, the department store’s flagship store on Herald Square is covered in elaborate displays made of thousands of flowers. And at the New York Botanical Garden, the Orchard Show has a fabulous display of beautiful blooms.

If Easter is in March, don’t miss the famous Easter Bonnet Parade on Fifth Avenue where people parade up and down wearing over-the-top spring-themed hats. Everyone is welcome so join in if you have a fabulous one of your own!

If you like sports, March is a great time to catch a New York Rangers hockey or NY Knicks basketball game at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Or if wine is more your thing, March is when the New York City Winter Wine Fest is held.

Of course, New York City has plenty of other things to do. Escape the early spring chill by heading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where you can easily spend a day and still not see all its treasures. Take an elevator to the top of the Empire State Building (it’s especially beautiful at dusk and early evening). Or take a ferry out to the Statue of Liberty (you can climb to the top of her crown but be aware that she faces away from Manhattan).

If you are traveling with children or teens, check out these recommended things to do: An Action Packed 3 Day New York City Itinerary and 10 Unbeatable New York City Attractions With Teens. In addition, if you are a first time visitor, please see this article filled with tips and tricks to save money, help you navigate the subway system and where to stay, and how to stay safe – 50 Best New York City Tips For First Time Visitors.

Weather And Directions

March is still quite chilly, so you’ll need your winter coat. Average high and low temperatures are 53 and 36F. It rains about 25% of the days.

There are three major airports servicing New York City. JFK is about 15 miles from midtown Manhattan and La Guardia is about 9 miles. Alternatively, Newark Liberty is actually in neighboring New Jersey and about 16 miles from midtown Manhattan. There are various buses, trains, shuttles, as well as taxis and ride sharing opportunities offered at all the airports.

Hotel Recommendation

James says, “There are literally hundreds of hotels to choose from in NYC, but a favorite is the Bryant Park Hotel. The golden-topped art deco building is beautiful, the location in Midtown hard to beat, and the service impeccable.”

Antelope Valley, Southern California (Photo courtesy of Catherine from Nomadicated)

Southern California Desert, California

By Catherine from Nomadicated

March brings golden-colored poppy blooms that dot the hills of Southern California and ideal temperatures to take an amazing desert road trip along Highway 395. That is why it is one of the best places to visit in the USA in March.

Visit Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in the spring to witness one of California‘s many reasons for its nickname, the Golden State. Peaking in March, the Mojave Desert Grassland comes alive with golden poppies rolling down its slopes. Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve provides access to the best poppy viewing areas via pathways that cut through the gentle slopes, only a 1.5 hour drive from the heart of Los Angeles.

Continue northeast for 3 hours to comfortably visit the famous Death Valley National Park, the hottest, driest, lowest point in the world. The diversity of formations in the valleys is what makes this National Park so unique. Explore the salt flats at Badwater Basin, the volcanic fields at Ubehebe Crater, and the colorful hills of Artist’s Palette. Try catching the sunset at Zabriskie Point or the sand dunes at Mesquite Flats. You will be dumbfounded at its starkness and beauty.

Weather And Directions

With temperatures hovering around 70F highs and desert lows at night not exceeding 45F, it’s the perfect time to pop out the tank tops. It’s almost always sunny in arid Southern California.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the most accessible international airport from which to arrive. From there, a car is necessary as there is little public transportation to the depths of the Southern California Desert.

Hotel Recommendation

Catherine says, “As the third-largest National Park in the USA, it’s best to try and stay at least one night in Death Valley. The Furnace Creek Campground is an excellent middle-ground for the next day’s activities, with Stovepipe Wells as an alternative. On your way out, detour to other hidden gem desert landscapes like Trona Pinnacles or Fossil Falls.”

Phoenix, Arizona

By Emily from Emily Embarks

Located in south central Arizona just 180 miles from the Mexican border, Phoenix makes for one of the best cities to visit in the USA in March. Often overcrowded in the winter months of December through February, and scorching hot in the summer months, March marks the first real relief for tourists who venture here in the off-season.

With fantastic weather, you can take advantage of hiking Phoenix’s iconic Camelback Mountain peak. Known for its spectacular panoramic views of the city, you’ll be able to capture some wonderful photos to commemorate your trip.

Those looking for a more relaxing day, you can hit the shops in the Scottsdale Fashion Square or wander the halls of the impressive Phoenix Art Museum. Art connoisseurs who enjoy works from the Renaissance are sure to appreciate this vast collection of stunning pieces. There are also numerous golf resorts to be enjoyed, just don’t forget your sunblock!

If possible, try to plan your trip around the Phoenix Scottish Games celebrating all things Scottish or the Arizona Renaissance Festival, a medieval amusement park, which take place in the month of March. Both bring in thousands of people each year, so be prepared for a little less elbow room if you do decide to visit Phoenix during these times.

If you plan on visiting for at least a few days, then brush up on some Spanish and combine it with a trip to Mexico.

Weather And Directions

The weather averages in the low-70s (Fahrenheit) with a low chance of rain and over 12 hours of daily sunlight.

To get to Phoenix, visitors can fly directly into the city’s Sky Harbor International Airport. It is a 10-minute drive to the city center.

Hotel Recommendation

Emily says, “After a day full of sightseeing, sit back and relax at the Rise Uptown Hotel where you’ll be greeted with lovely hospitality and luxury ambiance at an affordable price.”

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

By Wayne from Always On The Shore

Hilton Head Island is a beautiful place to visit in any season, but it is one of the best destinations to visit in the USA in March.

One popular attraction is the annual Wine & Food Festival. Come here for Lowcountry food, craft beer, and of course, wine tastings. There is even live music and entertainment.

Another fun thing to do in Hilton Head is to visit Harbour Town. This is arguably the most well-known attraction on the island. Located on the waterfront, you can climb to the top of the historical lighthouse in Harbour Town. See the stunning views of Daufuskie Island and the surrounding area. Alternatively, you can also walk along the Harbour Town Pier or rent kayaks and paddleboards. March is an excellent time to visit Anchorage, Alaska if you’re looking for snowsports, fantastic state parks, and an adventure that could discover the Northern Lights.

Springtime in Alaska is typically still snowy and ski resorts like Alyeska Ski Resort have more snow than anywhere else in the country. That means adventurers can go backcountry skiing in nearby Chugach State Park.

Hillside and Kincaid trails might still be groomed for cross country skiing. However, if there is an early melt, you can still drive to Hatcher Pass’ Independence Mine and ski around a state historic park.

Most visitors to Alaska also want to see the Northern Lights in Anchorage but are worried about the long, frigid winter nights. However, March is the perfect time to look for them in Anchorage and the rest of Alaska. March brings more sunlight to the last frontier and warmer weather.

March is a great time for all-day mountain adventures like skiing out to a glacier, up a ridge or through a stunning mountain pass with longer daytime hours. Chugach National Forest is home to countless trails and has vast stretches reserved for hikers and skiers, with other valleys home to incredible snowmobiling.

Weather And Directions

The average weather in Anchorage in March is in the teens and twenties but rarely below zero. There should be minimal new snow and a low chance of rain.

Fly into Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport. Pack layers for your Alaskan adventure and get ready for a great snowy vacation!

Hotel Recommendation

Mike says, “Alyeska Resort is one of our favorite places to stay this time of year and offers a ski & stay package that includes lift tickets. Many Alaskans enjoy winter camping in March and the good news is you don’t need to reserve any sites until things melt.”

There are lots of fun things to do in Siesta Key like spending time at the beach. The beach is famous for its quartz, white sand, and beautiful blue water. At the beach, there are lots of outdoor activities to do like jet skiing, parasailing, and sunbathing. A bike ride on the beach at sunset is also beautiful.

Chicago, Illnois

By Brodi from Our Offbeat Life

Chicago, Illinois is one of the best places in the United States to visit in March. There is a large St. Patrick’s Day celebration throughout the entire city around March 17. It takes place the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day if the holiday falls on a weekday.

The most popular event in the city-sponsored festivities is the dyeing green of the Chicago river. A local plumber’s union uses an environmentally-friendly, food-grade dye to color the river shamrock green either on St. Patrick’s Day, or the Saturday before. It’s a free event that is attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

Later that same day, a parade is held that highlights Chicago’s strong Irish heritage. Troupes of Irish dancers, bagpipers, and other Irish performers participate.

When not enjoying the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, there are endless things to do in Chicago. Go for a walk in beautiful Millennium Park in downtown Chicago and then, head to the beaches and bike paths on Michigan Lake. If it is chilly, venture to world class museums such as the Museum of Science And Industry and the Natural History Museum, to name only a few. The Science and Industry Museum has an actual German U-505 submarine from WWII to explore as well as an underground coal mine.

Weather And Directions

The weather in March in Chicago can be highly variable. Some years it might be 75F and sunny while others it might be in the 30s with a chance of snow. Regardless of the weather, all the city-wide St. Patrick’s Day events are well attended. Plan to dress in layers.

Chicago is one of the few US cities that is accessible by two major international airports. Midway airport is south of the city, and accessible by the Orange Line subway. O’Hare airport is north of the city, and is accessible by the Blue Line subway.

Regardless of what airport you choose, do not rent a car. Traffic is often gridlocked and parking is incredibly expensive. Public transit and rideshare services are both affordable and accessible, even for people in wheelchairs or traveling with strollers.

Hotel Recommendation

Brodi says, “There are scores of hotels found in the downtown Chicago area. The best neighborhoods to get to the city’s St. Patrick’s Day events are the Loop, Streeterville, and the Gold Coast. The Chicago Hilton on Michigan Avenue is walkable to the Chicago river and close by the parade route as well.”

Great Basin National Park, Nevada

By Allison from She Dreams Of Alpine

Tucked away in a hidden corner of eastern Nevada near the Utah border is Great Basin National Park. It is an awesome place to visit in March for lots of reasons, including being a great place to avoid the crowds of popular spring break destinations in the USA. Although the weather in March can still be quite frosty, you’ll still find plenty of awesome things to do in the Park, no matter the conditions.

You can explore the unique and rugged landscape on a variety of hikes in Great Basin. These include easy jaunts through conifer forests or ancient bristlecone pine groves. For something more challenging, consider hiking to the summit of Wheeler Peak, the second highest point in Nevada at 13,044 feet. While the trails are still beautiful in March, you’ll want to check the weather forecast and bring traction for snow and ice. Snowshoeing some of the trails is another awesome option.

One of the most popular attractions in Great Basin is the Lehman Caves. These cool limestone caves are open year-round, but do require a reservation for a ranger-guided tour. Exploring the stalagmite and stalactite formations in the subterranean caves is a great place to escape if there is snow.

Weather And Directions

High temperatures average around 48°F. There is definitely a chance of spring snow.

To get to Great Basin, you can fly into either Salt Lake City or Las Vegas International Airport. The drive from Salt Lake is just about 4 hours while it’s around a 5 hour drive from Vegas to the National Park.

Hotel Recommendation

Allison says, “You can camp at the Lower Lehman Creek campground which is the only campground in Great Basin that is open year-round.”

There is no better destination for a late winter or early spring getaway than the palm-fringed golden beaches of Maui. In March, weather on Maui is in full transition from the wet to the dry season. This results in an abundant decor of tropical foliage, fragrant flowers, generous waterfalls and a colorful rainbow here and there. This makes it one of the best places to visit in March in the United States.

The best way to discover the lush side of Maui is by driving the Road to Hana. This scenic drive is known for its 620 curves and 59 one-lane bridges. Along the way you get to discover majestic waterfalls, verdant botanical gardens, intriguing lava tubes and a black sand beach.

Another family-friendly Maui activity not to be missed in March is a whale-watching cruise. March is one of the best times of year to see these giants up close since that’s when they breed, calve, and nurse their young in the warm and safe waters beside Maui.

Since the ocean swell eases in spring, one of the best Maui activities in March is snorkeling. Antelope Canyon, Arizona

By Jessica from Unearth The Voyage

Antelope Canyon is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world. It is a slot canyon located in northern Arizona near a small town called Page. Slot canyons are narrow canyons with tall walls on either side and an opening at the top. Antelope Canyon is one of the most famous slot canyons because of its gorgeous colors, light beams that shine down and illuminate the canyon walls, and wave-like textured walls.

To visit Antelope Canyon, you must book a tour and go with a guide. The walk through the canyon is about 1 mile and is usually pretty crowded. Although, nothing beats seeing this gorgeous canyon in person.

If you are trying to get away from the crowds, it is suggested to check out some of the other amazing slot canyons in the area. Some are more adventurous and could require longer hikes, climbing up and down ladders, and squeezing through really tight places. However, you might have the whole place to yourself!

Another incredible place to check out in the area is Horseshoe Bend. At the Horseshoe Bend overlook you will see how the Colorado River below has created a deep canyon in a horseshoe shape. The views here are absolutely incredible and worth checking out.

March is a lovely time to visit Antelope Canyon because the weather is not too hot or cold. However, that brings the crowds. Unfortunately, checking out other slot canyons in the area or going in the off-season is the only way to avoid crowds at Antelope Canyon.

Weather And Directions

The best time to visit this area and Page is in the spring and fall. The average temperature in March is a high of 62 and a low of 40. There is little rain at this time.

To reach Antelope Canyon, the best international airport to fly into is Las Vegas. From there, rent a car and drive the 4.5 hours to Page, Arizona.

Jessica says, “The best place to stay in the area is the Wingate by Wyndham hotel in Page. This hotel has excellent ratings, is super clean, and has a great breakfast. If you are looking to camp, one of the best campgrounds in the area is Antelope Park RV Park just outside of Page.”
