overview

In conjunction with the American Red Cross, USF Recreation & Wellness offers several certification courses throughout the year. All of our courses are available to the public and are held at the main Campus Recreation Center indoor pool. Please see below for available courses and dates. All visitors must obtain a parking pass.

Adult First Aid/CPR/AED

The primary purpose of the Adult First Aid/CPR/AED course is to provide bystanders to gain the knowledge to recognize and respond to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies in case an event is to arise during their everyday lives. We give participants the knowledge and skills they need to give immediate and correct skills and determine if advance medical care is necessary.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

We are excited to offer you American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers Blended Learning. The primary purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers course is to teach those with a duty to act (professional rescuers) the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies. This includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim experiencing cardiac arrest.

Lifeguard

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard course is to teach you the skills needed to help prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This includes land and water rescue skills, as well as first aid and CPR. As a professional rescuer with a legal responsibility to act in an emergency, you must be self-disciplined and confident in your knowledge and skills. You need to have solid public relations, customer service and conflict resolution skills. In addition, you must be willing to be a leader and a good team member. Being a lifeguard requires maturity, professionalism, and competence in specialized rescue techniques.

Lifeguard Prerequisites
  • Minimum age of 15 years
  • Swim 300 yards continuously using either front-crawl and/or breaststroke
  • Tread water for two minutes using only legs
  • Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
    • Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

4 Seats Available!

The newly revised CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (CPRO) program trains individuals with a duty to act including lifeguards, EMS personnel, police, security personnel, firefighters and athletic trainers—to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This course is also intended for individuals serving in roles that would be called upon to provide support in an emergency. In order to participate in this instructor course you must possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and be at least 16 years of age on the last day of the instructor course.

In addition to CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, successful instructors will be certified to teach:

  • Administering Emergency Oxygen (must hold certification in AEO)
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training
  • Asthma Inhaler Training
  • Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training

Once certified, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer Instructors can complete an online bridge to teach the following American Red Cross programs:

  • Emergency Medical Response (with additional license/certification)
  • First Aid/CPR/AED (lay responder)

Is CPR AED for the Professional Rescuer the same as BLS?

There is no difference between BLS and CPR,” he said. “BLS is an abbreviation for Basic Life Support. It is simply another term for CPR and leans towards meaning healthcare provider level.”

What does it mean to have a duty to care act as a professional rescuer?

Duty to Act The duty to respond to an emergency and provide care. Failure to fulfill these duties could result in legal action. Standard of Care Professional Rescuers are expected to meet a minimum standard of care, which may be established in part by their training program and in part by state or local authorities.
Lay Rescuer CPR is much more simplified. In lay rescuer, you may do adult only CPR/AED or adult, child, and infant CPR/AED. Also, lay rescuers do not check for a pulse. Lay rescuers also only learn 1 person CPR.

Is Basic Life Support the same as professional rescuer?

Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR (Professional Rescuer) Healthcare Provider CPR, which is commonly referred to as Basic Life Support (BLS), means that you will have training in adult, child, and infant CPR/AED for 1 and 2 rescuers.
