Who is Dave Meltzer?

There is no greater name in professional wrestling journalism than Dave Meltzer. Since the 1970s, he has covered a wide range of promotions, covering both large and minor ones, and frequently provided his opinions on bouts, wrestlers, storylines, and other topics. In the early 1980s, inspired by his love of wrestling, he founded the Wrestling Observer, where he is still publisher and editor today.

Even while he may not be everyone’s cup of tea and may annoy some of his coworkers, he still holds a significant place in wrestling history.

What is his rating procedure?

His star rating system has become Dave Meltzer’s main source of renown over the years. For the past forty years, he has given ratings to a variety of matches from WWE, WCW, NJPW, and other organisations, ranging from minus five stars to five stars.

The vast majority have fallen inside the aforementioned range, although over time Meltzer has grown accustomed to deviating from his norms in order to make bouts he considers to be exceptionally special. As a result, numerous fights have earned five stars or more.

  • Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega: June 9, 2018 – 7 stars

With Omega and Okada deadlocked for first place with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on the line, the stakes were at an all-time high. After numerous V-Trigger knee attacks and a second One-Winged Angel, Omega triumphed in the contest and the ensuing conflict, ending Okada’s illustrious 720-day run as champion. Thus concludes the one and only game Dave Meltzer has ever given a whopping seven stars.

  • Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega: June 11, 2017 – 6.25 stars

The two wrestlers kept up a quick pace, throwing everything they had at each other from bell to bell. This fight was one for the ages thanks to flurry of blows, excellent grappling, jaw-dropping near-falls, and an overall tense environment. To top it all off, because Omega and Okada fought right up to the 60-minute time limit, which resulted in a stalemate, neither man was declared the winner. It’s not hard to understand why Dave Meltzer gave it the only game he’s given six and a quarter stars so far.

  • Kenny Omega and Adam Page vs. The Young Bucks: February 29, 2020 – 6 stars

AEW already has a six-star bout under its belt despite only having launched in 2019, and it’s the first tag team match to ever receive that rating. In an AEW Revolution match on February 29, 2020, Kenny Omega and “Hangman” Adam Page faced off against the Young Bucks.

Given the Bucks’ close personal bond with Omega, Page’s mistrust of them was evident throughout the fight, which led to him landing several powerful blows and using huge man oeuvres that had a personal edge to them. In retaliation, Matt and Nick Jackson gave neither of their adversaries a break, inside or outside the ring.

With a Buckshot lariat to each of the Young Bucks, Page sealed his team’s victory and put an end to an exhilarating title defense that Dave Meltzer rated six stars.
