Yuuri’s “let’s end this” made sense

Okay, hear me out. I don’t mean that it was the correct endgame or anything like that. “Let’s end this” was a wakeup call that Victor needed.

I watched the Barcelona arc a lot (a lot). And something that struck me was... Yuuri putting his hand on the ice on his SP broke him. His confidence got shattered again. He failed Victor. And he felt that so so starkly.

And Victor failed to pay enough attention. Where he succeeded in Beijing (trying to help Yuuri’s mental breakdown before the FP), he failed in Barcelona.

Yuuri was not yet confident in himself. He was not yet able to shake off his mistake.

And Victor was playing wistful skater, choosing to watch Yurio, Chris, and Otabek over taking Yuuri aside and trying to reassure him about how much coaching meant to him.

No wonder Yuuri decided that he needed to put Victor first, and set the wistful skater free to return to skating, pumping his all into proving that Victor’s coaching had been worth it for Victor to have done.

Yuuri put Victor first, and in the process made Victor have to face up to what he missed. What his not being open with Yuuri almost did. What his lack of experience had almost cost them both.

Then Yuuri rose to the challenge, because he is a magical cinnamon roll who was capable of reaching the stars on his talent, and he had found the perfect motivation: a swansong dedication to Victor.

Then Yurio, who could seemingly care less about Victor’s return to the ice, skated for his life so Yuuri couldn’t retire. Because Yuuri wasn’t willing to go out with a silver from Victor’s efforts. Victor’s efforts deserved gold.

Hopefully Victor took the lesson to heart too. Yuuri had not yet found the confidence of seeing his innate talent, and Victor now has a second chance to help him find it as his coach (and fiance).

I wonder if Katsuki stood on the top of the stage for Worlds that year... (and can’t thank Mizuno enough for the art we’ve been seeing to know that the katsudon is still going strong, skating for Team Japan!)

My contribution to @yoiholidayzine with an Otayuri art dedicated to Sant Jordi ❤️ Each April, 23th the streets of Barcelona are filled with people strolling around with books and roses 📖🌹😊 "The story of Sant Jordi is the same as the one that is known worldwide. Saint George was a hero - he saved a beautiful Princess who was about to come to a sticky end at the hands of a dragon who had been terrorizing a village. There are various versions of the story, but these facts always remain the same. Sant Jordi is the Patron Saint of Catalunya, and his tale is well-known throughout the city. The basic idea for Sant Jordi is that men give women roses and women give men books. And it can be anybody, not necessarily your partner or somebody who you have taken a liking to. For this feast, boys buy roses for their mums; girls buy books for their friends. Also, in today's forward thinking society the rules are no longer set regarding who gets what. A girl is just as likely to receive a book and vice versa."

En conclusión,QUE SE JODA EL MAOH KING POR HABER HECHO ESE VIDEO DE MIERDA QUE NUNCA DEBIÓ DE EXISTIR,A VICTOR UKE Y A YUURI SEME QUE OBVIAMENTE ES FUERA DE PERSONAJE Y DE QUE SE HAYA HECHO TAN POPULAR ESA MORBOSIDAD DE VIDEO DE MIERDAAAAAAAAA

Day 21: Summer

A short fic for day twenty-one of the YOI 20+ Club’s Daily Art Challenge!

This one is a continuation of Day 20, so read that one first.

- - -

Note: I’m so sorry! This is more than 600 words over my limit of 1000, these two just got away from me and I didn’t want to torture myself any more dragging this storyline out another day!

Also note: Prepare for sappiness overload. Healthy communication and supportive partners are the themes of today’s fic.

- - -

Victor woke to the sound of his phone ringing, lying flat on his back with a marginally-awake Yuuri draped over top of him. He tried to grab for the phone, but his arm was somehow hooked through Yuuri’s, reducing his reach to just a few inches.

“Yuuri,” he begged.

“Noooo,” Yuuri moaned, twisting so he was now on his back, his head falling to the bed just under Victor’s armpit.

That couldn’t be comfortable. But it did free up Victor’s arm, so he grabbed the phone.

“Oh. It’s Phichit.”

Yuuri took the phone. His only contribution to the conversation was a few wordless ‘mms’ before he hung up. Then he tossed the phone somewhere on the bed and proceeded to crawl over Victor like he was trying to climb inside of him. When Victor couldn’t take it anymore he grabbed Yuuri’s shoulders and pulled him against his chest, forcing him to lie still. Yuuri put up no resistance.

“Why are we like this?” Victor complained, “Yuuri? I used to be a morning person.”

“I don’t knoowww. Oh, Victor, I smell awful, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I think that’s me.”

“No, it’s definitely me, you smell amazing.”

Victor, still not used to sleepy Yuuri’s unfiltered commentary, blushed.

Yuuri leapt up, suddenly awake. “Um, Okay! Well, anyway, I’m going to take a quick shower and go see Phichit. You just - stay there.”

Victor frowned. “You don’t want me there?”

“I don’t want to subject you to an excited Phichit this early in the morning. I don’t want to scare you off.”

“So you’re planning on keeping me around, then?”

The comment was meant to be offhand, but it caused Yuuri to squint at Victor like he was trying to decipher him.

“I’m going to go see Phichit, and then I’ll be right back,” he promised. “Do you want me to bring you anything?”

Victor shook his head.

When Yuuri had showered, changed, and left, Victor changed into a clean shirt and boxers and tucked himself into his own bed. Yuuri’s seemed somehow cold without Yuuri there.

He didn’t think he would fall asleep again but the next thing he knew Yuuri was crawling under the covers next to him.

Victor roused. “Yuuri,” he began.

Yuuri pulled Victor’s arm over himself. “Can we just lay here? For an hour?”

Victor scooted closer so he could bury his face in Yuuri’s hair. “Sure. Why?”

“I want to talk to you, but I’m tired and I don’t know how to say it. I don’t want to say the wrong thing. Like I did the other day.”

“Oh,” Victor muttered, “Okay.”

The third time Victor woke up he was still wrapped around Yuuri, who was turning off his phone alarm. Victor lay quietly, trusting Yuuri to start talking when he was ready.

“Victor?” Yuuri broke the silence.

“Hm?”

“Why do you keep talking about me keeping you?”

Victor tensed. “Yuuri, it was a joke.”

“But it sort of wasn’t, right? You mentioned it our second night here, too.”

“That was because you had just said you didn’t need me any more,” Victor retorted, a trace of the hurt from that night resurfacing.

He could feel Yuuri take in a deep breath and then let it out slowly.

“Phichit was right, I didn’t clear anything up, did I?”

“What do you mean?”

“Victor, if I retire tomorrow, will you want to stop taking care of me?”

“Of course not,” he answered automatically. Taking care of Yuuri, and letting Yuuri take care of him, was the only thing in his life aside from skating that made sense.

“Do you think I would want you to stop taking care of me?”

Victor felt his throat constrict. He was glad Yuuri couldn’t see his face. “No?” he guessed.

Yuuri was trembling slightly as he placed his hand over Victor’s and threaded their fingers together. “That’s right. I won’t stop needing you just because I’m not skating. Please don’t stop taking care of me, Victor. Not when I retire. Not ever.”

“I won’t,” Victor assured him, curling even tighter against Yuuri’s back. The smell of the onsen’s shampoo in his hair felt safe, like home.

“Okay,” Yuuri breathed. Then, “But I really do want to keep going. I want to win with you, Victor.”

“You will,” Victor promised, kissing the back of Yuuri’s head.

“I want to keep skating, but I’m willing to quit so that you can compete without being weighed down by me. I would give it up to make you happy.”

“Yuuri,” Victor warned, “I already told you, making a sacrifice like that wouldn’t make me happy.”

“I know. And I feel the same about you. But that’s where I’m confused.” Yuuri paused, like he was gathering his thoughts. “For you, Victor, I don’t know what the sacrifice is. Is it retiring? Or is it to go back to competing when you don’t want to? I thought I knew, but maybe I guessed wrong.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Victor said in a rush, “I’ll do whatever’s the best choice, Yuuri. I- ”

“Is that what you were thinking when you said you were coming back? That it was the best choice?”

“It was the best choice,” Victor pointed out.

“For who?”

Victor paused, unsure of how to answer. It had seemed obvious, before now.

“Victor, you’re…” Yuuri began.

Victor held his breath, dreading whatever came next. Whatever it was that Yuuri had wanted to tell him last night.

What Yuuri said stunned him: “You don’t have to do things just to make other people happy. Victor. You’re allowed to ask for what you want. You’re even allowed to demand it. I won’t always be able to give it to you, but I promise to try.”

“Yuuri,” he started to argue, but then Yuuri began stroking his forearm and Victor fell silent.

”Can we just try something? Just be Victor. No one knows your name, no one expects anything from you. What do you want?”

Victor, who had been floored more than once during the course of this conversation, felt suddenly cut loose. He started to breathe erratically, like he couldn’t get in enough air, but then Yuuri took one of Victor’s hands and pressed it flat against his chest, and Victor could feel his ribs expanding and contracting, and he tried to match the rhythm.

“I don’t know,” he said when his breathing had finally steadied.

“Try?” Yuuri urged.

“I don’t know if I should say,” he whispered.

“Is it too much?” Yuuri guessed.

Victor nodded, pressed his lips to Yuuri’s hair.

“Victor. Has anything you’ve done so far been too much?” Yuuri asked.

Victor wanted to argue that yes, it had been, every moment beginning with him showing up to coach Yuuri unannounced. But then the evidence to the contrary shifted in his arms, moving somehow even closer, and he reconsidered.

Too much was just fine with Yuuri. Maybe this would be okay.

He started with the most obvious one: “I want to go home with you.”

“You will. In four hours.”

“Every day,” Victor clarified.

“Good. I want you to.”

“I want to get another dog. A rescue. With you.”

“Me too,” Yuuri agreed easily.

He thought about that little triangle pin affixed to his rain jacket back home. “I want to stay in Hasetsu.”

“Okay.”

He squeezed Yuuri’s hand, “I want to buy a house with you.”

“Okay,” Yuuri’s voice was trembling. He curled around Victor’s arms, and Victor curled up with him.

“I want to get married in the summer. I know it will be too hot and not as pretty as the spring, when the cherry blossoms are blooming, but I don’t know - I just feel like… the summer is important for us.”

“Yes,” Yuuri whispered, “Yes, Victor, yes.”

They lay quietly for a moment, Victor’s heart pounding so hard he was sure Yuuri could feel it. He felt electrified, like he needed to run yelling through the halls, or leap between tall buildings, or kiss Yuuri until they missed their flight and had to stay in Barcelona another night.

Or do a quad flip.

The thought had barely entered his mind before Yuuri asked, “Do you want to skate?”

He considered it. He obviously wanted to skate with Yuuri. He wanted to skate with him forever. But as for the rest of it?

“I don’t know,” he said truthfully.

Yuuri turned, then, to face him. He looked carefully at Victor, as though scrutinizing a rare treasure. Then, he leaned forward until their noses brushed. Victor took the invitation and kissed him.

It was soft, but Victor’s heart started racing again anyway.

When Yuuri pulled away, he reached up and ran his fingers across Victor’s cheek and into his hair.

“It’s okay to not know,” Yuuri said.

Was it?

Victor’s thoughts must have read clearly on his face, because Yuuri repeated: “It is okay to not know.”

“Yuuri,” Victor murmured, reaching for him, and then they were kissing again.

When they broke apart this time, Yuuri said, “Will you do me a favor, though?”

“Anything.”

“Will you schedule some coaching sessions with Yakov?”

Victor frowned.

Yuuri went on, “You’ll need them if you’re going to prepare two programs for Worlds.”

Victor was startled. “I don’t see- ” he began.

“They don’t need to be new programs, I know you have a bunch you’ve never performed. But you know the ISU will invite you even if you don’t compete at Nationals. And when that happens - yes, it will happen,” Yuuri emphasized at the look on Victor’s face, “When that happens, I want you to be able to turn them down because you want to, not because you have to. I want you to have a real choice.”

“Yuuri,” Victor breathed. His chest ached.

“If I am going to take you from the world,” Yuuri said with a tiny, satisfied smile, “I want to do it properly.”

Barcelona.

I’m working myself into a confused fugue trying to understand the events of Barcelona. From the rings to the “break-up” to the make-up to the finale, because in the end it works out but man oh man the characters’ thoughts are complex in this one.

I think we need to start with Yuuri to get there. Namely, at the start of Barcelona, where was Yuuri’s mind?

Well, the beds were pressed together, and we’re certain that Victor and Yuuri are sharing the room. I think we can all agree what this means. That after Rostelecom, these two are together. No ambiguity. No doubt. Boyfriends. Sleeping together. The whole shebang.

So Yuuri comes to Barcelona with Victor, who is both his coach and his boyfriend. It’s opened Yuuri up a bit. He’s more willing to speak his mind, ask for what he wants (sightseeing!) and go a grand gesture (exchanging gold rings in the church). The show cleverly put us in Victor’s mind for all of this, so we can only guess as to the meaning.

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

Okay. In a normal world, exchanging rings with your boyfriend means a long term commitment. And... it’s pretty clear that that’s at least kind of(?) how Victor interpreted it... but I think he was also very confused.

Because it’s possible, at least on the level Yuuri was convincing himself, the rings were just a thank you for changing his life. That Victor swooped in like a fairy godmother and turned the humdrum Yuuri into the belle of the ball. That even now, when he has seen Victor’s soft side. When he has kissed him and fallen in love. When they run with abandon to each other in an airport. Yuuri is still convinced that he’s not worth being more than a chapter in Victor’s tale.

Victor came to coach him, and as always showed off his brilliance by bringing Yuuri along, showing that he could bring out the ‘Victor’ inside of the “dime a dozen.”

Deep down, Yuuri didn’t want this to end. He knew he was in love, he knew that Victor’s coaching of him was exactly what he needed, he knew maybe even that Victor had fallen in love too... but... that would mean stealing Victor away from the skating world that treasured him. And the dime-a-dozen footnote shouldn’t be selfish like that.

When Yuuri put his hand down in his short program, he believed he had failed Victor. When he observed Victor enraptured by Yurio and Chris’s programs... I think he made a decision. He knew that Victor would want to stay with him, but he didn’t deserve it. So the only thing he could do was cut him loose, vowing to skate the perfect program so Yuuri’s chapter in the Book of Victor was a resounding success.

It’s why Yuuri said “let’s end this”, and it might even be why he was so surprised when Victor cried. And was shocked that Victor was upset that Yuuri was planning on retiring after this Grand Prix. Because Yuuri didn’t think himself worthy of further coaching, and he didn’t even consider that Victor had fallen in love with coaching, something that might not have happened if he had coached anyone else.

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

And from the day of the free skate, from the heartbroken face of Victor, we can tell that they did not get anything resolved overnight. That means at the beginning of the free skate: Yuuri is retiring and breaking up with Victor as his coach, probably also as his boyfriend.

Victor does his damndest to put on a happy face, and Yuuri tells him to be himself. Victor’s response? “How have you not won gold yet when I took a break for you? How much longer are you going to stay in warmup mode?”

It’s a moment where Victor was real, and it was a moment where he “believed in Yuuri more than Yuuri believed in himself”, because Victor affirmed that Yuuri’s wild success up until that point was just the start. It’s heart-wrenching, because both of them believe at this moment that it’s Yuuri’s final skate. Victor’s making sure Yuuri knows that he believes in him. And they’re finally feeling the grief of what this skate means will be lost.

And then Yuuri skates the program of his life. He skates it perfectly, and he changes elements, so he can prove that Victor’s time with him was worth it, and so Victor can move on, because he now lives on inside of Yuuri. At the Kiss & Cry? Victor tells Yuuri first: he’s coming back. And Yuuri is over the moon. The free skate seems to have done its job, at least in part. Victor and Yuuri are not breaking up, even as Victor is going to return to the ice. Sure, Victor is no longer Yuuri’s coach (at least that’s what Yuuri assumes), but he laid his heart out on the ice one last time, and ended gloriously.

Enter Yurio. Who only recognizes one single skater as his rival. Victor coming back to skating? Who cares? What does that mean for Yuuri. When Victor says Yuuri may retire but has not decided yet? Yurio skates past his own limits to force Yuuri to stay on the ice... no retiring for piggies. And well... it’s probable that Yurio’s skate was the difference-maker for Yuuri’s choice to (or not to) retire.

Because Yurio won. Yuuri gets the silver (by 0.12 points when 3rd place was down by 20!) and Victor decides that he won’t kiss it unless its gold. At this point Victor teases Yuuri and definitely insinuates that bedroom fun is coming (Victuuri not broken up confirmed guys!) but... Yuuri surprises him. By staying in skating. With Victor. Next year. Yup. Yurio did it. Yurio kept his rival in skating.

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

But Yuuri also now needs to regroup and find a new coach, which probably also means a new program. Because he can’t skate his dedication to Victor with someone different. He figures it’s worth trying again, worth getting the gold so Victor (his boyfriend) can kiss it, worth skating on the same ice.

Except... Yuuri has failed to notice. Yes, Victor is in love with Yuuri (I think that even Yuuri’s adorkably dense skull sees that), but Victor is also in love with coaching Yuuri. And now that he knows that Yuuri wants to stay too? Victor ain’t letting any coaches anywhere near his sweet katsudon. Yuuri could be a million times better, okay? and Victor can’t wait to get him there. So Victor will skate and Victor will coach; to hell with anyone who tells him otherwise.

Sometimes Yuuri’s choices gave us whiplash, but if we think about him... that his brain and his heart sometimes acted at odds with one another, that we knew more about how Victor had evolved than he did, then the Barcelona arc makes sense.

And thankfully, by the end, everyone was on the same page. Love prevails, and Yuuri and his coach can live happily ever after, on the ice and off of it ♥️♥️♥️

Yuri!!! On Ice Mythbusting!

Did Yuuri buy one ring or a pair?

There’s this persistent myth going on in the Yuri!!! On Ice fandom that in Barcelona, Yuuri bought only one ring, and Viktor secretly bought the other one earlier, despite the rings being described as a matching pair in the anime. So which one is true?

Let's do some mythbusting!

In her episode commentary for the Go Yuri Go!!! official fanbook Mitsurou Kubo talked about the rings and explained why she and Sayo Yamamoto decided that Yuuri buys a pair. This is a recent translation of this paragraph done by rikeijo:

The rings that Yuuri bought are pair-rings. [I chose pair-rings] because when I did some research I saw they are cheaper when you buy two (laugh) and if they were to have matching items I thought that rings are after all the most fitting item. A lot of real world skaters also wear accessories as protective charms. But more than that, Yuuri, who has surprised Victor many times in the show, wanted one more weapon, or should I say a new item to fight in the final battle. When I proposed this idea of rings to Yamamoto-director, she answered "Yes! This is it!!" (laugh). We started talking like: an athlete in a stressful situation would definitely do something like that! So it was closer to something like "let's wear the same items as members of the same club [bukatsu]", rather than meaning marriage.

(For a full translation of Mitsurou's commentary, please check out rikeijo's blog!)

In older translations like this interview in the 2017/3 issue of PASH! Magazine, she also talks about a pair, and if you check Google, you will find even more translations on this subject. While they all differ in wording, they agree that Yuuri bought a pair. As many characters in episodes 10 and 11 point out, these rings perfectly match each other. In the restaurant scene, Viktor says they’re a pair. As it was revealed after the broadcast of the series, the rings have engravings which, when put together, form the image of a large snowflake and two smaller ones.

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

If they had bought two separate rings, they would need to go through a lot of effort to make them match (or search all the jewellery shops in Barcelona and hope to find the same design). The poor jeweller would need to adjust the design and engrave the snowflakes—and this is time-consuming and probably expensive. I doubt the rings would have been ready in time for the GPF. It's not an impossible theory, but it’s quite a stretch. I don't see a benefit in this, especially since Yuuri wants an omamori for the Grand Prix Final. Omamori are amulets or charms, which are sold at Buddhist temples and Shinto Shrines. They come in various forms and purposes. An ordinary omamori wouldn't do because Yuuri's skating and feelings for Viktor are intertwined. He has been very vocal about his desire to form an inseparable bond with Viktor at the press con in episode 5. Therefore, the item of his choice must combine all these different requirements. This article gives a brilliant overview of the various kinds of omamori. A certain omamori is for couples who wish to stay together and is sold as a pair. Yuuri thus creates his own omamori, using a matching pair of golden rings.

According to my current understanding of the spiritual aspects, two individual rings would violate the concept of omamori, i.e. would not be able to bestow good luck and thus would be unsuited for Yuuri's purpose.

The multi-layered meaning of the rings has been analysed in depth before. Please check out this fascinating post by sachiro and this no less amazing post by lazuliblade to fully appreciate the value these rings have to Yuuri and Viktor. Two individual rings could never reflect all this.

I suspect that this screenshot, which has confused Western and Japanese fans likewise, is keeping the ring myth alive.

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

Yes, that's right. This bill says that Yuuri only buys one ring, which is curious because a few seconds earlier he says “Can you show me these two?” But why would the production team change Kubo-sensei’s ideas when she and Sayo Yamamoto were head over heels for it and wove a multi-layered meaning into these rings?*

I suspect that whoever created this bill made a translation mistake because—plot twist—the Japanese language doesn't have a plural form for nouns. Whether it’s ‘ring’ or ‘rings’, it's the same in Japanese. A counter is added to the word if the context requires specifying the number of items. No wonder fans in and outside of Japan got headaches over this!

So, the small but important bit that it’s a pair was likely lost in translation when this bill was created.

I hope I was able to debunk this myth and convey why we can safely say that these rings are a pair! If you know more about the spiritual background of omamori, the making of the scene in the shop, or the creation of the bill, please let me know!

* If you carefully read the interviews in which the rings are mentioned, you can infer some of these meanings (apart from the obvious one meaning).

Future YoI scores???

We all know those Yuri on Ice fanfics where they’re set in the future and Yuuri gets gold or Yurio gets gold but rarely Viktor getting gold in the finals, and I was like....fair enough but then I remember his scores from Sochi compared to the Barcelona scores and I was like.... bitch can still get gold

Yurio’s total score was 319.53 at Barcelona compared to Viktor’s....

A night in barcelona yuri on ice

335.76..... so tell me how this man still would not get gold? That’s a good 16.23 point difference and Yurio is 15/16 and will be hitting growing pains soon. Although it does depend on how well Viktor goes back into training while also be Yuuri’s coach

Aaah congratulations, dear! ☺️❤️ You really deserve it! For the tickle AU maybe Yuri on ice? I wonder what will turn out of this 🤔

[Tickle AU Game]

Aaaaaw thank you so much!!! ❤️ You are so sweet*w*

Yuri On Ice TK AU

• The only thing crossing my mind would be that in an alternative universe, Victor and Yuuri's meeting at the banquet could have tickles involved! Even though I enjoy the two dancing together, just imagine if it had not been a drunk dance-off that took place at the party, but a tickling battle!

• Yuuri would've been the bold one, along with Chris to initiate such a crazy thing. Yurio would be dragged into it just like he was with the dance-off, forced into a tickle fight but eventually giving it his all, our passionate and precious little blondie.

• The moment when Victor is dragged into the tickle fight he's so confused, especially when Yuuri starts tickling him and he tries to twist and wriggle his way out of it, laughing and giggling like crazy.

But then when he starts tickling Yuuri back, Yuuri's laughter is so loud and bright, he throws his head back and squirms, and Victor is just wonderstruck as he continues tickling him, falling in love with Yuuri’s cuteness and beauty and most of all his precious laugh.

• And then when they are reunited at last and Victor is Yuuri’s coach, he just can’t wait to tickle him again and see that pretty laugh again, but like in the canon series Yuuri is kinda distant (because he’s an embarrassed bean) and Victor is pouty and sulky, he just wants a tickle fight with Yuuri again!

• Eventually he slowly starts teasing Yuuri with tickles during practice, taking in more and more of that pretty laugh until they grow closer and Yuuri doesn’t hold back his reactions anymore.

• Victor is at his happiest in Barcelona when he finally understands that Yuuri remembers nothing of their intimate tickle fight at the banquet, and in their hotel room he happily reminds him how it exactly happened as he indulges in his beautiful laughter again.

I am once again thinking about Yuri On Ice if it didn't have a default language and crying over the wasted potential

Yuuri's inner monologue & every conversation he has with his friends and family from Hasetsu are in japanese

But he speaks to Victor (and every other skater) in english

And as if he's not already shaken enough, he has to be the translator between Victor and his parents who want to speak to him but can barely speak english

All the skaters speak English to eachother (and all of them have accents, even the Asian ones, while we're at it)

Victor's inner monologue we get in barcelona and every convo that's between Russians is in Russian!

I mean Victor speaking to Yakov, Yurio speaking to Yakov, Lilia, Mila, his grandpa, all in Russian

Sometimes Yuuri will walk into Victor & Yurio speaking russian

Yurio will occasionally angrily rant to Yuuri in Russian and refuse to translate

Day 20: Ride

A short fic for day twenty of the YOI 20+ Club’s Daily Art Challenge!

- - -

Note: Cliffhanger!

- - -

“Coach Victor, come collect your skater!”

Victor looked up from his drink to see Yuuri and Phichit staggering off the dance floor, Phichit stooping as Yuuri leaned on him. Phichit was waving a little frantically, as though on the verge of being crushed.

Victor hid his smile behind his hand.

“I’m sorry, Chris,” he said as he got up to fetch his exhausted boyfriend.

“No, you’re not,” Chris smirked up at him, eyes twinkling. Chris’s boyfriend, Massimo, looked up from his spot next to Chris and also gave Victor a knowing smile.

Victor glanced at Yuuri, then back at Chris and Massimo. “You’re right, I’m not,” he agreed, his smile growing.

Chris laughed and waved Victor off. “Be safe!” he called at Victor’s retreating back.

Victor had never been one to stick around after a competition was over, but Yuuri and Phichit had been so excited by the possibility of a reunion in Barcelona that Victor had suggested staying an extra night after the Grand Prix Final was over so they could go dancing.

He was glad he had. Yuuri, horrified by the revelation of his drunken shenanigans at last year’s official banquet, had refused even one glass of champagne this time around. Victor wouldn’t say the mood had been tense, but… it certainly wasn’t celebratory. Tonight, though, with no sponsors to impress and nothing on their agenda but a flight tomorrow afternoon, Yuuri had let himself have fun.

Victor loved to see it.

He reached the two exhausted skaters and gathered Yuuri up, rocking slightly as Yuuri relaxed into him.

“So, are you two ready to head back, then?” Victor asked Phichit, who presently seemed much more alert and likely to answer questions than Yuuri.

“Eh, I think I’ll stay for a while with Chris and Massimo. Yuuri’s done, though,” Phichit said, nodding at the man who was currently rubbing his face into Victor’s chin.

“Okay. If we don’t see you tomorrow- ”

“I’ll call, don’t worry. Yuuri won’t get away without eating breakfast with me,” Phichit promised, giving Victor a bright smile before heading towards the bar.

“Hi,” Victor said, pressing a kiss to Yurri’s forehead. Yuuri tasted salty and a bit like fruit punch. “You ready for bed?”

Yuuri nodded, and Victor steered them out of the club.

They were barely past the door when Yuuri yawned and slumped against Victor’s side.

“Victoru,” he pleaded, his tired brain adding an extra syllable to Victor’s name.

“You want a ride?” Victor asked.

“Mmhmm.”

“Okay, then,” Victor turned and let Yuuri wrap his arms around his shoulders, then hoisted him up. Despite his exhaustion, Yuuri’s strong legs latched tightly around Victor’s waist, just above his hipbones.

Yuuri hooked his chin over Victor’s shoulder, his hair brushing Victor’s cheek as they walked.

It was a short walk to the hotel from the club, and even at two in the morning the streets of Barcelona were crowded. No one looked twice at one grown man carrying another on his back.

“You hungry?” Victor asked. Yuuri made an inscrutable noise, so Victor stopped at a food stand and bought him a pastry. Yuuri seemed more alert after that.

“Oh, I forgot to tell Phichit goodbye,” he said, the fingers of one hand digging into Victor’s shirt as he reached out with the other to discard the wrapper.

“He’s going to drag you to breakfast tomorrow.”

“Good,” Yuuri said, leaning forward once more and wrapping his arms around Victor’s neck.

It was another minute before Yuuri spoke again.

“Victor?” Yuuri said, turning as though to face him but succeeding only in pressing his cheek to Victor’s.

Victor, approving of this development, leaned into it. “Hm?” he asked.

“You said you were timing your comeback to coincide with Russian Nationals.”

Victor felt his heart drop into his stomach. He knew where this was going.

“Yes,” he agreed.

“That’s the same time as my Nationals,” Yuuri said.

“Yuuri, I- ”

“That part’s fine,” Yuuri waved him off. He hitched himself a little higher on Victor’s hips and pressed his lips to the back of Victor’s head. Victor shivered.

Yuuri spoke into Victor’s hair. “That’s only three weeks from now.”

“Yes.”

“You haven’t been practicing.” Yuuri tucked Victor’s bangs behind his ear for him before experimentally tugging on Victor’s earlobe. Victor, despite the direction of the conversation, felt reassured by the casual affection.

“No,” he agreed.

Yuuri sighed. He hugged Victor a little tighter.

“You weren’t really planning on competing at Russian Nationals, were you,” Yuuri said. It wasn’t a question.

“Yuuri, I can explain,” Victor began, but then Yuuri crossed his ankles in front of Victor and kissed behind his ear, derailing Victor’s thoughts.

“Victor,” he whispered into Victor’s ear, making Victor shiver again, “You’re…”

Victor waited for more, but then Yuuri’s head drooped forwards, and Victor realized Yuuri had fallen asleep. He sighed.

He carried Yuuri into the empty hotel lobby, onto the elevator, and deposited him onto his bed, gently removing Yuuri’s shoes before kicking off his own. He briefly considered showering and sleeping in his own bed, but the very idea made him tired so he just crawled onto Yuuri’s bed to lay next to him on top of the covers.

He lay awake for a long time, staring into the darkness and wondering what, exactly, Yuuri thought he was.

Nephi question! If they had a dating sim\visual novel centered around them, what pre-existing sim\visual ost would the game have?

oooo okok

truth be told, i haven't played many VNs or dating sims, but from what i've played, maybe the battle system of Arcana Twilight (and, by extension, Obey Me!), the setting of TWST, the relational plot of Our Life (both OL:BA and OL:NF), and the general aesthetic/artstyle of maybe something like KNY

as for the OST, i was thinking of a waltz as a main theme (think of Yuri on Ice's Passacaille in Barcelona as Neph's theme) but i dunno what else lol

what about Yume? what does her dating sim/visual novel look and sound like?

Episode 3 - I am Eros and Eros is me?! Face-off! Hot Springs on Ice

Just another little post on things I’ve picked up while rewatching episode 3 of Yuri on Ice.

First off, is that our Yurio? Showing concern?

Look at the way he’s cradling Yuuko’s head, it’s very unlike Yurio. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard Yurio speak with so much worry in his voice. While the nosebleed is obvious anime humour, hearing Yurio be so genuinely concerned had me thinking about something he said in later in the episode.

Where is Yurio’s mother? For the longest time I thought that she was just neglectful, or just too busy, but now I’m thinking maybe she’s ill? Perhaps she passed away, and maybe that’s why Yurio was so peeved off with Victor when Victor assigned him agape. Victor described it as a ‘god-like love’, but where was God’s love when he needed it? And Victor knowing Yurio since he was young should KNOW that this is taking the absolute piss. Hah, jokes on you Yurio, Victor probably thought, since Victor doesn’t know the meaning of unconditional love either.

(I’m going to put the rest under the cut, because this post is long enough as is)

On the topic of Victor, it’s also worth thinking about how Victor still looks sad skating here. While he’s not skating for public viewing, he still doesn’t seem to find any enjoyment in it anymore.

I should probably mention here that Takeshi (who didn’t see Victor skate Eros) even tells Yuuri that ‘Victor probably hasn’t even thought much about what Eros is to him’ which Yuuri AGREES with:

It’s because Victor is Victor, he can get away with it. So even Yuuri can see that Victors skating has become less focused on the meaning behind the choreography and more on the technical aspects like perfecting jumps and step sequences. He’s become a machine, a robot in skating, but the world wants perfection, so it’s what Victor gives them.

Now here’s a shot of Victor after skating Eros:

Don’t you just love the irony of Yuuri standing in between Victor’s legs after he skated Eros?

Then we get this masterpiece:

THEY’RE STANDING SO CLOSE TOGETHER, THEIR HAIR IS TOUCHING. I just love how they’re the perfect contrast of light and dark, Victor’s silver hair and icy eyes just match up so well with Yuuri’s dark hair and brown eyes.

Yuuri standing there like, ‘did that really just happen?’ and being so phased by it that he starts checking Victor out.

Now we all know the infamous ‘playboy comes to town, seduces the most beautiful woman, blah blah’:

Anyone else think the background of Yuuri’s version of the backstory of Eros looks kind of like Sochi? No? I’ll just leave this here then, with ‘foreshadowing’ echoing in the background

Spoiler alert Takeshi: If you can’t beat them, join them. If you can’t join them because they’ve taken the year off to coach you, then propose to them in Barcelona and make them your fiancé.

Here’s another shot of Victor looking sad when he thinks no one is watching:

Ahh yes, Yuri Katuki, our fave.

And then we have my favourite bit of the episode right at the end, but alas I’m saving that for another post I’m working on

tagged by @virychatillon, @kevin-durant, and @juncosracing! thank u besties 🙏

put your “on repeat” playlist on shuffle and list the first 10 songs that play, tag a few people while you’re at it!

my on repeat playlist was terribly out of date so i just did what i've been listening to on repeat lol... and ended up rambling as usual 😔

1. Albumblatt für Ernst Benedikt Kietz in E Major, WWV 64 - Wagner

been exploring repertoire that isn't concertos/big orchestral works! stumbled across this n fell in love <3 long since have come to the conclusion that nothing beats violin+piano but this cements it ehehe

2. Orfeo ed Euridice: Melody (Arr. G. Sgambati) - Gluck

this is rlly. such a lovely and melancholic thing. just listen to it ahh

3. Schwanengesang, D. 957 - IV. Ständchen in D Minor (Arr. for Violin and Piano) - Schubert

it's a lil bit of a diff take on the ständchen but it's sooo good. and this recording in particular has big names like anne-sophie mutter (violin goddess) and daniil trifonov (piano god)! mostly here for mutter tho her style is so emotive and spicy and rich

4. Six Romances, Op. 6, TH 93 - VI. None but the Lonely Heart (Arr. Elman) - Tchaikovsky

another piano+violin combo that makes me want to tear my heart out and microwave it

5. Le Sapin, Op.75 No.5 - Sibelius

honestly kind of obsessed with how. jazzy this is? it's so nice and so not sibelius but also so sibelius

6. Légende, Op. 17 - Wieniawski

the second half has me going insane. repetition and sequences legitimize or whatever but wieniawski didn't have to put his whole pussy into it

7. Étude-Tableau, op. 33 no. 8 in Gm - Rachmaninoff

practicing it again so it's obligatorily on repeat lol. lost my rach virginity to this and haven't looked back since <3

8. Piano Quartet in Eb Major, Op. 47, 3rd Mvmt - Schumann

actually insane behaviour like clinically legitimately in every sense insane

9. Swan Lake, Act II: Grand Pas de Deux - Intrada & Adagio - Tchaikovsky

less on repeat physically and more stuck in my head for the last couple days. embarrassed myself trying to sing the intrada to fio. but hah! found it

10. Passacaille in Barcelona - Taku Matsushiba

yes this is from yuri!!! on ice. no i will not be accepting constructive criticism at this time

no pressure tags! @cedobols @gridcode @jedivszombie @mickstart @alfavaltteri

Who made a night in Barcelona?

A Night In Barcelona [feat. Harold Land] by Bobby Hutcherson & Harold Land on Amazon Music - Amazon.com.

Do yuuri and Victor date?

They made the queer ship canon. Yuuri and Victor are officially a thing, folks. And it's not ambiguous to me.
