Although the midsize pickup truck segment is heating up the 2022 Chevy Colorado is unlikely to lose any market share.

On the contrary, the moves Chevy is making should help increase sales.  And that’s even though Chevy’s umbrella GM slices some of its sales off to the GMC branded midsize each month.

Even so, Colorado is one of my favorites in the segment.  And for many good reasons, as you’ll read below.

2022 Chevrolet Colorado – What’s New?

New for 2022 Chevy is offering Colorado a dealer-installed Trail Boss package.  That’s on the LT and Z71 models.

And that package includes front and mid-vehicle skid plates.  Plus a 1-inch suspension leveling kit.  Special 17-inch ZR2 black wheels and Chevy bow-tie badges along with red tow hooks.

Prices And Trim Configurations

As with Colorado’s full-sized sibling, Silverado, there is a dizzying array of trim configurations you can choose.

Cab And Box

First, you can select either an extended cab or a crew cab.  But as you do that you need to also pick your bed – aka box.

So the crew cab is offered in either a long or short box.  Whereas the extended-cab comes only with a long box.

In either case, the short box is 61.70″ (5’2″) while the long box is 74.00″ (6’2″).

Trims

Next, you have your trim options.  And they include the WT (work truck), the LT, Z71, or the ZR2.

Overall, there are exceptions to every option.  But I’m going to layout some generalities here in an effort to normalize while giving you a broad view of your options:

WT – see dealer for pricing: The work truck is what you’d expect, a truck focused on getting jobs done.  With creature comforts, advanced tech, etc. taking a backseat.

LT – see dealer for pricing: Colorado LT can be a chameleon.  Because you can choose to option the LT into an on-road beauty or an off-road beast – depending on the direction you want to go.

Z71 – starting MSRP $35,995: Chevy’s Z71 trim is off-road focused.  It’s more off-road aggressive and sporty-looking than the LT or WT as well.

ZR2 – Starting MSRP $45,395: This truck takes Colorado off-roading to another level of seriousness.  Both in looks and performance.  Get this truck and plan to spend a great deal of time in the dirt, off-pavement.  Also, with no worries about stop signs, traffic lights… or traffic overall.

Special Editions

As Chevy is known for, Colorado offers a slew of special editions this year.  And they include:

Custom – As the name suggests, make it yours, however, you like.  Think executive who hauls stuff.

Redline – Black and red accents adorn this package.  And my test driver pictured throughout this post had it.

Trail Boss – This is a new one for 2022’s Colorado – takes the LT and Z71 off-road packages to a slightly higher level.

Z71 Midnight  – This one is more of an on-road package.

ZR2 Midnight And Dusk  – Blacked out off-road packages

3.6L V6, 308 hp & 275 lb-ft of torque

Engines, Transmissions, And MPG

So, just like your trim options, there are plenty of engine and transmission combinations to choose from.

Engines

It starts with three different engines.  There’s a 4-cylinder, a V6, and turbo-diesel.  Each delivers different performance metrics:

  • 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder putting out 200 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque.
  • 3.6L, V6, delivering 308 hp with 275 lb-ft of torque.
  • 2.8L turbo-diesel, powering 181 hp with 369 lb-ft of torque.

Transmissions

And the above motors are paired with one of two different transmissions.

First, there’s a 6-speed automatic.  And that comes with the 2.5L 4-cylinder and the 2.8L turbo-diesel.

Then there’s an 8-speed automatic and that comes with the V6 exclusively.

Fuel Economy

Overall, the 2022 Colorado’s MPG ratings are solid.

The turbo-diesel delivers the best MPG with the 2WD version doing 20/30 in the city and highway.

And then the least fuel-efficient combo comes from the 4WD version of the V6.  That is 18/24 for the city and highway.

All other fuel economy ratings fall between the aforementioned stats.

Max Stats

The ’22 Colorado has a maximum payload capacity of 1,550 lbs.  And that’s with the Crew Cab and V6.

However, max trailering for the Chevy midsize pickup is 7,700 lbs.  That’s with the 2.8L turbo-diesel.

Exterior – What Does Colorado Look Like?

When it comes to aesthetics, Colorado looks like a small Silverado.

Additionally, Colorado can be configured to look like an off-road beast.  At the same time, it can be set up to play the role of an executive transport vehicle.  But one that has to haul stuff from time to time.

Undoubtedly Colorado is a Chevy and a very good-looking rig – however you decide to configure yours.

45″ of front-seat legroom

The interior of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is one of my favorite features.  In fact, it could arguably be one of my Top-3.

Because it’s spacious and comfortable for both front and backseat passengers.  Also, it’s smartly laid out and makes use of quality materials.

Both to the look and how they feel when you touch them.  For instance, my test driver didn’t have leather.  But the cloth surfaces were very comfortable.  And had a high-tech feel to them.

To be clear, I have been leasing a 2019 Tacoma with leather.  And the 2022 Colorado with cloth was far more comfortable from the moment I got in.

Finally, 5-adults can fit no problem in Colorado.  I’d keep long drives to just four adults.  But in my Tacoma, 4 adults is sardine-can tight and just doesn’t work.

Best in class infotainment UX

Infotainment And Technology

Chevrolet’s infotainment system is one of my favorites.  Because it’s simple and intuitive to use.  Furthermore, you can figure it out within seconds of sitting in the cockpit.

I love it because it strikes just the right balance of touchscreen features with real buttons and knobs.  So, it’s not overdone in the ‘tablet as a center stack’ department.  It’s functional and it works – easily.  That’s how I like my tech! :0)

Additionally, the 2022 Colorado includes or has available all of the common safety tech features that we’ve come to expect in new vehicles these days.

But here’s the thing…

I was baffled at this one item that Chevy has got to update.  My Colorado test driver has a key!  Literally, a key needs to be inserted into the ignition on the steering column.  What?  Come on Chevy.  I love your truck across the board but get that right in 2023!

2022 Chevy Colorado Top-3

So, coming full-circle back to the top of the article and my Top-3 favorites about the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado.  They are as follows:

  1. Versatility/capability – You name the job, Colorado offers a trim and option-set that will get it done in style.
  2. Styling – Speaking of style, whether it’s beastly off-roading or a glam night on the town – Colorado covers you both ways.
  3. Drive – This has to do with both the feel of driving and performance.  But also the interior comfort as not all trucks are comfy.

Is the Chevy Colorado V6 a good engine?

Colorado Engine The available V6 and turbodiesel powertrains are better options. With the V6, this Chevy is quick off the line and has more than enough juice on the highway. The diesel is smooth, and it unlocks the Colorado's highest towing capacity. What's more, most class rivals don't offer a diesel powertrain.

How much should I pay for a 2022 Chevy Colorado?

Price: The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado has a starting MSRP of $25,200. The top ZR2 Crew Cab model starts at $44,200. The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a top choice in the competitive midsize pickup truck segment.

What is the difference between the Colorado LT and WT?

The WT means work truck, and that means it has simple steel wheels, while the LT steps up to 17-in stylized wheels, and you can order 18-in rims on special packages. Other packages include the Redline Special Edition, which is a $2,690 option, that adds wheels, tires, steps and a bedliner.

Is the Chevy Colorado 3.6 reliable?

The Chevrolet Colorado Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 4th out of 7 for midsize trucks. The average annual repair cost is $599 which means it has average ownership costs.
