2008 honda civic 1.8 belt diagram

My serpentine belt broke and I spent several hours last night trying to replace it myself. I just couldn't quite get the damn thing routed properly. Reviewing information today, I have a few questions.

1. is it absolutely necessary to loosen the tensioner while you're putting on the new belt? I haven't been, and maybe this is why I haven't been able to get it on.

2. I've come across two similar but different routing diagrams for my car; any idea which I should use?
