1999 jeep grand cherokee tie rod diagram

This is actually the correct terminology.

Where are you going to order the part from?

You'll have the 2 ends that are on the Tie Rodone with right hand threads and one with left threads. One will attach to the Drag Link and the other will attach to the drivers side knuckle.

You have the one end that threads into the adjusting collar on the Drag Link at the pitman arm.

And the only other end is made onto the other end of the Drag Link this end attaches to the passenger side knuckle.

I have a Moog ES3095R ("Front Left Inner To Connecting Tie Rod") and ES3096L ("Front Right Inner To Pitman Arm") from AA.

I don't really get what "inner" and "outer" are referring to. And I don't get how it can connect to the pitman arm and be on the right side of the vehicle.

So the immediate problem I have is that I can't seem to figure out which part numbers I need and where they go!

I think I MAY have figured it out: left/right describe the tie rod, not the TRE. So anything "left" is the tie rod, since it's on the left; and anything "right" is the drag link, since it's to the right of the tie rod.

So left inner and outer are the passenger and driver side tie rod ends, respectively.
Right inner and outer are the draglink TRE and the long part of the draglink with the integrated joint at the right front wheel.

3094 and 3095 are the ends for the tie rod, one for each end. (opposite sides are threaded opposite)

3096 is the end for the drag link at the pitman arm, and the 1238 is the actual drag link.

The terminology has changed over the years. If you look in the 91-93 and 94-96
parts catalogs, the bar going to the passenger side was called a "Tie rod end" but
starting in the 97-99 catalog, that part is called a "Drag link socket." The straight
tube to the driver's side used to be called a "tube" but later is called a "tie rod tube".

Most Jeepers use the newer terminology since it is clearer and the picture Holder350
posted reflects just that.

If you find what you need in your catalog and you want a part from a local store, print
the diagram page, take it to the store, and with that you should be able to get what
you need. Or, order confidently from Morris using their diagram and understanding
that it is the part number and not the part name that really counts.

Forgive my ignorance. I have looked around for a while and not found a clear answer.

I always thought the rod that connects to the pitman arm was called the "drag link", and that the rod connecting the two front wheels together was called the "tie rod". But in that diagram they appear to be named the other way around.

Next, I'm having hard time finding the right "name" for the rod ends. I see a driver and passenger side tie rod end, one at the pitman arm, and then one integrated into the bottom end of the drag link. But at the store they call them "left inner", "left outer", etc. One of them even had a description saying it connects to the pitman arm, and I think it was "right inner".

Anyway, if anyone can set me straight on this, I would appreciate it. I have replaced virtually every part in the front end and still have DW and this is pretty much the only thing left.

I am also confused by which parts are which.

I have a 1996 XJ and noticed grease where the tie rod end ? connects to the Pitman? No grease drip onto the ground but I am trying to find the right tie rod end to replace it.

Can you or anyone kindly advise me if they are the correct Moog item numbers I need for my 96 XJ?

And I am uploading a couple of pictures I just took yesterday so please have a look and advise me if it is indeed the tie rod end that connects to the pitman that I need?

My XJ drives good and straight with no vibrations or any sort of death wobble so is it ok for me to drive my Jeep with it as is until I can order the parts?

Beachdriver, if there is no play in the socket, you're probably ok to drive it.
A little grease leaking out means the seal is leaking. Pump some more grease
in to replace it until you want to change it.

Just as an aside, I bought all four Moog parts (the 3 small ends and the long drag
link socket) for my Jeep's steering three years ago (sorting through their confusing
system of numbers) and within two years of use two of the sockets had play. For
a Jeep which gets hard use on bad roads, it is better to get original parts.

This Jeep dealer http://www.stevewhiteparts.com/Parts/ gives good
discounts online so you end up paying the same or less than for Moog.
Do a search on the site using the Mopar part number, which is 52005739
according to the parts catalog and you'll find he sells the original part
for $36.05.

However, for normal service, the tie rod ends from Morris' www.jeep4x4center.com
or a local parts store would do you fine.

I sure appreciate it and since no play or anything as of yet I will add some grease to it until my friend can find the time to take it to his shop....he's a transmission rebuilder and is extremely backed up due to the large number of snow plow guys who have blown their tranny's moving all the snow around that we have had the last couple of weeks.

Yes the descriptions from Moog are very confusing.

I just now found a Moog official website and after putting in my 96 Cherokee I came to this

And the ES3096L as you said does say this is the tie rod end that connects to the pitman...where the other site showed the other part number.

So for now I am just sticking to greasing my leaking one but when I do order I will either go OEM or this Moog ES3096L.

I replaced 3094, 3095, and 3096, but not 1238 (that's the main part of the draglink from the right wheel to the adjusting sleeve), and the DW is still going strong.

Every part in the front end has been replaced now, except that one tie rod end, and the upper control arms.

But I have no clue if his vid is helpful or not but since you say you still have the issue I figure no harm in posting it for you hoping it might help you out.
