Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren look into a murder that may be linked to a demonic possession. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they have ever seen before - marking the first time in US history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence. Horror sequel, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga

A star rating of 3 out of 5.By Kevin Harley
Between its appealing leads and solid shocks, the eighth entry in the expanded universe of Conjuring films largely refreshes an otherwise flagging franchise. Director Michael Chaves' true-crime-slanted chiller reunites us with spouses Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), whose demon-busting skills - plus Ed's dicky ticker and Lorraine's psychic wellbeing - are tested when they try to acquit a young tree-doctor (Ruairi O'Connor) of murder. Their grounds? Demonic possession. A paranormal detective story develops as the Warrens press their case, with Chaves flaunting his horror know-how along the way. While some of his schlocky sequences border on rickety, he executes them with gusto, notably during a full-bore opening exorcism and a more insidious water-bed episode. The increasingly overwrought set-pieces do result in an unfocused climax, but Wilson and Farmiga's chemistry takes up the slack nicely, offering something to care about amid the thudding scares.
