Internal Medicine Residency

As the name of our practice implies, our physicians have committed their careers to medical education in the Miami and Miami Beach area. All have board certifications in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and teach extensively in both fields.

Dr. Claudio Tuda and Dr. Cynthia Rivera are the Program Director and Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and are very involved in teaching rounds and conferences with interns, residents and medical students.

Dr. Kenneth Ratzan is the former Chief of Medicine and has been a teaching attending at Mount Sinai Medical Center for over 40 years.

Program Information

Fully approved four-year training program for residents is available in anatomic and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathology training includes autopsy, surgical pathology, and cytology. Rotation is mandatory through the Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office for training in forensic pathology. Clinical pathology training includes clinical chemistry, hematology, blood banking and microbiology. Special training is also provided in research methodology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular techniques.

Eight pathology residency positions are offered. There are AMA-approved residencies in anesthesia, general surgery, internal medicine, radiology, urology and AOA approved residencies in internal and emergency medicine and a AOA credited podiatry residency. Fellowships in pathology, cardiology, interventional cardiology, breast imaging and surgical oncology are also offered. Additionally, residents and fellows rotate from the University of Miami School of Medicine in dermatology, family practice, geriatrics, infectious disease, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Medical students, along with residents in medicine, surgery and podiatry rotate through the Department of Pathology which serves as the Pathology Department for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University.

Mount Sinai Medical Center is a 955-bed (plus 52 bassinets for newborns) non-profit hospital with an average daily census of 382 adults, 7 newborns and 25,091 admissions per year. The hospital is affiliated with the University of Miami School of Medicine, the Florida International University College of Medicine, the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. Number of autopsies 81, total number of lab tests performed approximately 2.5 million, number of surgical specimens 18,809 number of cytology specimens 2,710. The clinical laboratories are modern, highly automated, and the staff includes 131 technical and nontechnical personnel.

Facilities are available for research programs, including those for immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular techniques. A modern 33,000-square-foot free-standing animal research facility is available, ALLAC accredited.

The Medical Library Service provides a collection of over 5,000 medical books, current subscriptions to several on-line databases and over 300 on-line journals, audio CDs, and a large number of books on CD ROM format, covering the total health sciences program of the medical center. In addition, our Medical Library is a member of the Medical Library Association and part of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

The hospital is centrally located in the residential section of Miami Beach, a famous resort vacation community whose population is swelled yearly by visitors and winter residents. Their physicians refer many of these people from other areas and as a consequence, a highly varied pathology is represented in the hospital census. The community supports an opera company and symphony presentations. A variety of entertainment is offered and abundant facilities for spectator and participant athletic events are available. The University of Miami, Florida International University, Barry University, and the Miami-Dade College system offer a wide range of cultural and educational opportunities.

Application Instructions

Residency candidates must be graduates of approved medical schools in the U.S. or Canada. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have an ECFMG certificate. Satisfactory references are required.

Stipend

First-year resident salaries per annum, as of 2020-2021, are $57,653, second-year residents receive $59,890, third-year residents, $62,100, fourth-year residents, $64,728 and fifth-year residents, $67,328. All residents are offered health and dental insurance. Uniforms are provided.
