Although the number of digits in a checking account varies by bank, most use from nine to 12, according to U.S. Bank. Banks print the checking account number as the second set of digits in the series of magnetic numbers at the bottom left of the check.

The bank routing number and checking account direct the check through the banking clearinghouse that returns the instrument to the customer’s bank. Citizen’s Bank indicates financial institutions require these numbers when a checking account holder sets up direct deposits or electronic withdrawals using his checking account. The routing number is unique to the checking institution, while the account number is unique within the bank for the particular account.

Where is the routing number on a check?

Your routing number is the first set of nine-digit bank numbers on a check located in the bottom left corner. Each bank has its own routing number so they can identify where the checking account was opened.

The routing number is treated as an address that is associated with your bank, so each financial institution, like Huntington, has its own unique routing number. This code is used for electronic transactions such as a funds transfer, direct deposit, digital checks and bill payments.

Where is the account number on a check?

You can find your account number at the bottom of your checks, the second set of numbers from the left that is between 9 and 12 digits. This number lets the bank know which checking account to take the funds from. If you don't have a check available, you can find your account number on your bank statements, or by logging into your Huntington Online Banking account. You can also get your account number by visiting a Huntington branch and showing a valid ID.

In the upper right-hand corner is three or four-digit number, which is your check number. This number is helpful for your own record keeping, particularly when you’re balancing your checkbook.

On every check there is a number that corresponds with the bank where you have a checking account. You can find this number towards the top right of your check. This information is not used as much anymore since it includes the same details that are in your routing and account numbers on a check but the fractional bank number is still printed on each check.
