Apple cider vinegar
Other Names:cider vinegar
What is Apple cider vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is a light golden color vinegar distilled from apples with a tart, fruity flavor. Use in salads and general-purpose cooking. It can even be used to deglaze a pan for making a pan sauce.
Substitute For Apple Cider Vinegar
When you're looking for a replacement for this vinegar, look for another option with similar acidity. This is particularly important if you are using the vinegar in a canning recipe.
If you don't have apple cider vinegar, you can substitute equal amounts of:
- Malt vinegar, the famous vinegar served with fish and chips, can be a suitable alternative in sauces, some cooked dishes, and pickling but less so for salad dressings. There is a gluten-free malt vinegar available if gluten is an issue.
- OR - White wine vinegar is has a similar acidity of about 5-6%, so this would be a good alternative in salad dressings. Typically you can substitute it in equal amounts as apple cider vinegar.
- OR- White vinegar, also known as distilled vinegar, can be swapped out for apple cider vinegar, but it is more acidic at about 5-8%, and the flavor is sharp and lacks the slight fruitiness of apple cider. It is very suitable for pickling.
- OR - Rice wine vinegar - is the mildest of and lowest acid of these alternatives, so it should not be used in pickling, but it makes very flavorful salad dressing, but it will be less tart. If you want more acidity, you can add a teaspoon or so of lemon juice.
- OR - Use 2 tablespoons lemon juice per 2 tablespoons vinegar needed. We always suggest using fresh lemon juice but if necessary you could use bottled juice.
- OR - For deglazing a pan use wine, sherry or port
Where To Buy Apple Cider Vinegar
You can purchase apple cider vinegar in most any grocery store. Bragg's is a good brand you can find at Whole Foods markets, Walmart, and possibly your local health food or grocery store. Bragg's is a perfect choice as a supplement, but other standard grocery store brands are perfectly suitable for cooking.
