a) Depress the high limit Reset” red button (with power on). If button snaps back out, the temperature of the water is higher than the cut out setting of the limit switch. Allow water temperature to drop. The limit can be reset at 120°F or below.

SHORT VERSION:
OEM replacement, perfect fit. Works as intended, this product (WT8840A1000) is an improved direct replacement for obsolete version (WV8840A1000). This version has metal temp sensor vs older version had plastic temp sensor that was prone to failure. Expensive part, some complexity to install, may want to consider replacing water heater.

LONG VERSION FOR THOSE TROUBLESHOOTING:
WARNING: Be aware you're dealing with natural gas lines, possibly scalding water, take caution!
Bradford White 50 gal unit (Mod. # MI5036FBN) wasn't giving hot water, pilot light wouldn't stay lit and water was leaking from bottom of gas valve (this part). No gas = no status lights. Cleared gas chamber of debris, Replaced thermopile/pilot assembly seemed to get more gas to pilot. Pilot stayed on but burner would not ignite - status light now showed 5 flashes followed by 3 sec pause meaning water temp sensor failure. Water temp sensor is located on back of this gas valve unit. Original unit had plastic water temp sensor, new one has metal temp sensor. Replaced Gas Valve and unit is now fully functional again. I used PTFE tape and pipe thread sealant on threads, seems to work well.

Water temp sensor is located on back of this gas valve unit. Original unit had plastic water temp sensor, new one has metal temp sensor. Replaced Gas Valve and unit is now fully functional again.

What is a thermostat well?

Thermostat well is intended for installation in designated device (e.g. electrical boiler, water heater). Installation is done by screwing the well neck to device coat using suitable sealing.
