  • We love the Seaport and return often to view what ever large restoration project is happening at the time. Now the project is the restoration of the Mayflower II. The Seaport village is wonderful and we see something new every time we come. There is more there than can be seen in a day, so plan to extend the visit!

Perched on Connecticut’s eastern shore, the maritime community of Mystic is a wonderful destination for history buffs, outdoorsy travellers or those looking to unwind within sight of the water. Once one of the east coast’s great ship-building and whaling centres, this laid-back village also makes for an appealing stop between the big, bustling cities of New York and Boston. Accommodation options range from old-school riverside inns to a chic collection of contemporary cottages with space for the whole family. Whether you’re dreaming of a seafood feast or a fun holiday with the kids, the best places to stay in Mystic promise a brilliant base for an east coast adventure.

Named for the Mystic River which flows through the centre of town, Mystic has a fascinating maritime history. Stroll along the harbour to admire swish yachts, fishing vessels and classic steamboats — some of which are over 100 years old. The Mystic Seaport Museum is one of Connecticut’s largest attractions. Spread across 17 acres, the museum takes the form of a recreated New England whaling and ship-building village, including 60 historic buildings, four tall ships and almost 500 smaller crafts. Demonstrations and interactive exhibits bring the past vividly to life for visitors of all ages.

Cruise down to Fishers Island Sound, or try kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing on the Mystic River. There are hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding countryside, too, as well as great birdwatching at Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. The beaches at Westerly, Watch Hill and New London are well worth exploring, as is the impressive Mystic Aquarium. Mystic’s shops and eateries are also lovely for an amble.

Round off your days with a harbour-side plate of oysters and a cool tipple, before kicking back at one of the best places to stay in Mystic.
