The Chicago Auto Show kicks off today, and Jeep is at the show with a new “Black Package” for the 2022 Grand Cherokee L.

This one’s simple, because it’s exactly what the name says it is. Opt for the new Black Package, and Jeep paints a number of exterior items in glossy black. These parts include the 20-inch wheels, badging, mirror caps, roof rails and seven-slot grille. And that is everything. There’s nothing unique going on with the interior with this package, as it’s entirely about exterior aesthetics. 

The package will run you an extra $1,695, and it’s only available on the Limited trim level. That means it’s right smack dab in the middle of the Grand Cherokee L trim tree, above Laredo and Altitude, but below Overland and Summit. We’ll also note that this package is tied to four-wheel drive.

Jeep says the Black Package is available for ordering from Jeep dealers now, and if you’re in Chicago for the show, you can see if the new appearance is to your liking in person before doing so.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited is gaining a new Black Package, set to dmake an appearance at the Chicago Auto Show on February 12th.

The Black package is strictly an appearance-only option and, as the name suggests, features gloss black exterior accents. This is extended to the badging, roof rails and unique seven-slot grille. Of course, all four corners are carried by 20-inch gloss black aluminum wheels to match.

“The first ever three-row Grand Cherokee answered the growing needs of our Jeep SUV customers who asked for more space, functionality and legendary 4x4 capability,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand North America. “It’s important for us to listen to our customer base and that includes unique options they want, and the new Limited Black Package gives the 2022 Grand Cherokee L a sleek, customized look that further distinguishes it from anything else on the road.” 

This package accents some of the other standard exterior features of the Grand Cherokee L, such as the heated gloss black side mirrors. At this time, the package has only been confirmed for Limited models-- a “middle of the road” trim package on the Grand Cherokee L spectrum. Specifically, it w also appears that the Black Package is tethered to Limited 4x4 models.

The Limited Black Package will retail for an additional $1,695, and is available for ordering now. Currently, a 2021 Grand Cherokee L Limited 4x4 starts at $48,545 after destination fees.

Since its making last year, the Jeep® Grand Cherokee L (WL75) has become an important part of the Grand Cherokee lineup. Offering Grand Cherokee owners the ability to carry 6 or 7 passengers proved to be a game-changer for the nameplate and has now opened up the Grand Cherokee to many people who wouldn’t have considered the vehicle before.

The last Grand Cherokee (WK2) contributed a large amount of its success to the amount of dark-themed packages that were available on various trims in the lineup. According to Jeep, the “dark appearance packages” accounted for 40% of the brand’s sales on the WK2 in 2019.

So when the Grand Cherokee L launched in June of last year, we were shocked to see only one dark appearance package for the entire lineup: the Grand Cherokee L Altitude. Based on the entry-level Laredo, the Altitude added the following equipment…

But that wasn’t enough for some Grand Cherokee buyers. Some customers wanted even more luxurious options. Jeep realized this and created the Grand Cherokee L Limited Black. 

The Limited Black (ALC) package is currently only available for the Grand Cherokee L (sorry Grand Cherokee WL74 fans) and adds the same Gloss Black accents from the Altitude to the Limited models. This means that the Limited Black can now give customers dark-appearance features but with premium features like LED fog lamps, Capri leather seats, 8-way power driver seat with memory, 4-way driver/front-passenger lumbar adjuster with memory, and Selec-Terrain traction management system, which offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) on 4×4 models.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been seeing the new Limited Black package show up on dealer lots across the United States and Canada. This particular model shown, is currently in inventory (as of the writing of this article) at Wally Armour Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Alliance, Ohio. 

Since the announcement of the Limited Black, Jeep has also announced another dark-themed package: the Grand Cherokee High Altitude. The High Altitude package adds premium 21-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels, Gloss Black accents and badges, roof rails, and a unique seven-slot grille to the already well-appointed Summit and Summit Reserve Grand Cherokee L models.
