While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently gets questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by searching the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2022 Honda Civic ADAS.

The 2022 Honda Civic may be equipped with the following ADAS:

  • Adaptive lighting (Auto High-Beam Support System)
  • Lane Departure Warning (Lane Departure Warning/ Road Departure Mitigation)
  • Lane Keep Assist 1 (Lane Keeping Assist)
  • Lane Keep Assist 2 (Road Departure Mitigation)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (Traffic Sign Recognition System)
  • Blind Spot Detection (Blind Spot Information System)
  • Rear Cross Traffic (Cross Traffic Monitor)
  • Side View (LaneWatch)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (Adaptive Cruise Control)
  • Collision Warning (Collision Mitigation Braking System)
  • Collision Braking (Collision Mitigation Braking System)
  • Rear View (Rearview Camera System)
  • Park Assist (Parking and Back-Up Sensor System)

With all these systems comes multiple inputs (cameras and sensors).

Starting in the front bumper cover, there are 4 ultrasonic sensors for the park assist system. These sensors require initialization if replaced, or if the mounting location of the sensors are changed.

It is important to note that the 2022 Civic does not use a “millimeter wave radar” sensor behind the front bumper cover. On this vehicle, the forward facing-camera controls the systems that otherwise would’ve been controlled by the millimeter wave radar sensor.

Next, we move on to the windshield, where the forward-facing camera (Multipurpose Camera) is located. This camera controls the following systems:

  • Adaptive Lighting
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist (1 and 2)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Collision Warning
  • Collision Braking

There is a static and dynamic calibration procedure for the forward-facing camera. The service manual states to do either procedure, it is not required to do both.

On the passenger side of the vehicle is a camera located in the side mirror. This is the camera for the side view system, and it requires static calibration after certain events. The calibration procedure specifies the use of targets and other special tools.

Moving on to the deck lid/liftgate/tailgate where the back-up camera (Multi-View Rear Camera) is located. This camera is used for the rear view system and does not require calibration.

Lastly, is the rear bumper cover. The rear bumper cover has 4 ultrasonic sensors for the park assist system, and two radar sensors (BSI Radar Unit) for the blind spot detection and rear cross traffic system. The radar sensors are mounted on the lower quarter panel, behind the rear bumper cover. The park assist sensors require initialization if replaced or if the mounting location is changed. The radar sensors require static calibration after certain events.

This is just a brief overview of some of the different required procedures for the 2022 Civic. Always consult the OEM repair information to get the exact information and procedures required to service the ADAS.

After reconnecting battery, Whole sting of errrors *SOLVED*

I recently upgraded my horn package on my 2016 Honda Civic EXT. All went well.
I did have to take off the front nose to install the horn, and had disconnected the battery. (to prevent my from setting off the air bag sensors).

Got everything connected back up. New horn works great. I started the car, and it stalled out. I tried again and it started up, but now with a list of errors.

ACC, Emission Systems Problem (ESP), Power Steering Problem (EPS), Break System Problem, Break hold System problem, Hill start. Road Departure Mitigation problem (RDM). Charge System Problem, CMBS problem.

Now I know that the system needs to be 're-calibrated' as it has had a loss of power for an extend period. And I do remember reading that there is a list of steps you need to take to reset the system and clear all the errors.
Ex: Settings/Vehicle/, start on TPMS calibration, Idel the car for 10 mins, Drive over 60? for 90 seconds, after run, let idel for another 20 mins.

But I can not find that page that lists the steps in the correct order. Can any one enlighten me on how to reset the errors?

re: After reconnecting battery, Whole sting of errrors *SOLVED*

Well I am an idiot.

Cause of the issue: I had forgotten to reattach the cable to the air sensor located on the hood of the air filter.

Once that was reconnected. I did a full 'reset'. I disconnected the battery terminals. Let it sit for 10+ mins (In my case, over night) Hooked up the battery. Started the car. I had ACC and Road Departure problem errors. And "Drive Carefully, System Initializing"

I let the car sit for 15 mins. Not touching anything. (Started it up, went in side to eat breakfast.) When I returned, the errors were still there. I turned off the car, and turned back on. Backed out of my drive way, and in aprox 30-45 seconds, all the remaining errors cleared and all was well in the steering column display.

I drove for about 10 mins, parked in a parking lot, and turned on the center console interface (Hold the Power button for 3 seconds). Display came up. And did show 4 errors in its notification window. Break system, ABS, CMBS, and one other. I turned off the car and went into the store. Came out 30 mins later, Started her up, and drove out of the parking lot. With in about 1-2 mins, the errors on the center console cleared themselves.

Lesson learned: make sure you reconnect all the sensor cables, or else you are going to have a bad time

Why does my Honda Civic says system initializing?

This message means that the wheel speed calibration has been cleared by loss of battery power. If normally clears in about 200 feet of driving. If not, I suspect a wheel speed or similar sensor is out which prevents the systems from initializing.

How long does it take for Honda Civic systems to initialize?

The average acquiring time is less than 10 minutes, but it can take as long as 45 minutes.

How long does drive carefully Systems initializing take?

8-10 seconds.

What does it mean when it says system initializing?

Initialization is the process of locating and using the defined values for variable data that is used by a computer program. For example, an operating system or application program is installed with default or user-specified values that determine certain aspects of how the system or program is to function.
