The Ford Excursion not only the best SUV that I have owned, but it is the best all-around SUV that I have driven, & there have been many from the old IH Scout, GMC Suburbans, Ford Broncos, Mercedes Benz G-Wagen & an H1 Hummer. Just check the used car values of these if you have any doubts. One of Ford's biggest mistakes was discontinuing these vehicles, they were always far superior to its nearest competitor the Chevy/GMC Suburban, and when compared with what is available in current year model vehicles there is nothing available that will do what an Excursion will do with the same, or even close comfort for the driver, and the passengers. Mine is not for sale nor do I suspect that it ever will be in the future. Ford's second-biggest mistake was when it brought back the Bronco badging on a foolish imitation of the later model Broncos instead of basing it on an F-250 chassis and offered it in either a 2dr or 4dr models. I have driven my Excursion on any number of difficult trails, with the only constraint being its size, which has on several occasions, like the Mercury Mine trail Trail in Big Bend N.P. where there were a number of low water crossing fords where having the rear wheels out of the water until the front axle was clear of it making it possible to accomplish the crossing safely and taking advantage of the automatic locking front hubs. Afterward, it was easy to hook up a 4-Horse trailer and drive across the country on Interstate highways at 75mph with the cruise control set and still getting 17mpg. Even my English Mastiff is comfortable in his section of the vehicle, with 2 passengers in the rear seat watching a movie on the DVD player. The only non-factory equipment on the vehicle (other than the off-road tires that were replaced at 55,000 mi.) is the DGPS navigation gear that we use for precision off-road navigation and a satellite telephone for emergencies when cellular service is not available. My only even slightly negative commentary is to recommend that you not buy a gasoline engine model of these vehicles unless you are only driving on roads with frequent fuel stations. On the highway, we have a range of approximately 500 mi., though off-road in 4WD that is almost cut in half. The gas mileage differential between the gasoline engine and the 6.0l Powerstroke diesel and incremental reduction in vehicle range could significantly moderate the utility of the vehicle. On a similar subject, the 6.0l Powerstroke diesel engine, while significantly more versatile than the gasoline engine, does not compare with the original 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine but I cannot remember if I have ever seen an Excursion with the 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine.
