TCM - Transmission Control Module?????

2001 Cherokee Sport - I'm having some issues with my transmission. Its not wanting to shift into 4th gear....but sometimes it does. I took it into the shop and they replaced the range sensor and told me it was fixed. It was not. Now they are telling me its the Transmission Control Module.
I'm thinking I'd rather try and get one and install it myself. Electronics are not my specialty but I look at it as one more thing to learn about my jeep. I found a place that will send me a refurbished one pre-programmed

The TCU on your model year is an integrated part of the ECU. Only way to replace that is to replace the whole ECU. Have you ever had you trans fluid and filter changed?

Did you get your money back since they told you that was the problem fixed it and it wasn't?

All fluids have been changed.
No money back from the mechanic I went to.....I gave them a chance to try and fix it but I wasn't giving them any more money.
The guy is giving me a the runaround...so I'm picking it up today. If I order the unit posted above on ebay...does it need to be reprogrammed?

That's a good part number for a '98-'01 XJ TCM in the Ebay view.
I don't know what programming they're talking about, but yes, go for it.
Do you know how to get at the TCM to change it?
Make sure that before unplugging the TCM connector that you disconnect the battery negative post connector.

Keep in mind that it was the same shop that hoodwinked you on your NSS is the same shop that determined that the TCM needs to be replaced.

After some exhaustive diagnosing and research I am 99.9% sure I need to replace the TCM. All with the help of CCKen's posts!
Does the TCM need to be programmed to my specific rig or can I just plug n' play?
A while back I replaced the PCM and it had to be programmed with my VIN, mileage etc. I'm guessing that's not the case with the TCM but I'd just like to be certain.

If its a Renix, just plug n play. If its the H.O., the TCU is integrated with the ECU.

The TCM does not need to be programmed.
